Black color with thin brownish head that dissipated quickly. Roasty nose with chocolate and coffee flavors with brown sugar undertones. Body was much lighter than I expected it to be. Taste is equally mild, with a lush mouthfeel. Sweet malt and burnt chocolate finish. I was unable to detect the aroma hops, so I feel the beer is a bit one dimensional. | 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 1/5 | 10/20 | May 24, 2005 Slick, oily texture that a lot of Red Oak’s beers pick up. Slight notes of caramel and roast in it. Incredibly thin mouthfeel. The "aroma-hopped" aroma doesn’t really come through. Overall a sub-par beer, but not surprising from Red Oak. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2005 Draft at Carolina Ale House. Dark brown pour with aroma of malt, big chocoff. Yes, chocolate is present in the aroma and big in the taste here, with a complex, smooth finish. Red Oak beers are greatly under-rated on this site. UNCCTF (465), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

I didn’t get any chocolate out of it, but I did get some sourness in the finish. This was just way too weak for a dark beer for my tastes. 00cobraR (1098), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Oct 31, 2004 kind of weak and not really as full bodied as it claims. regular red oak is alot better than this. roasted smell and kind of bland. sampled at brewgrass 04 on draught. freekyp (903), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA

This one looks good with a dark brown body and ample tan head, but its downhill from there. Cocoa is apparent in nose. Body is thin, and the taste is sour and metallic, with an extract-like aftertaste. More akin to a Schwarzbier than a dunkel, but when it tastes like this who cares. Skip it.
