Nate (2256), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 26, 2008 From growler. Has a nice toasted grain-malt aroma, a bit sweet with some biscuit, topped with a bit of grassy-herbal hops. It was just tapped yesterday (when I bought it), so it’s as fresh as you can get it. Beany notes. Fresh. Dark amber-brown clear with a light foamy off-white, slightly lacing head. Has a medium watery body with medium carbonation. A bit of carbonic burn, but not unpleasant. Starts with a nice dusty-grainy toasted malt sweetness, somewhat rich and quite flavorful. This gives way to a nice subtle bitterness and fresh hoppy grassy character that is rather refreshing. Bitter finish and a nice grainy-nutty sweet after - a bit chalky on the tongue. This is a very nice Vienna, and one of the better beers I’ve had from Red Star.
santoslhalper (193), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 28, 2008 From growler, thanks to Nate. Clear deep copper body with a thin bubbly white head that has great retention throughout the whole glass. Clean, crisp bread and caramel malt aroma with a citric and fruity, almost grassy hop presence. Well balanced, delicious malt flavor with caramel, banana, apple, pine, citric and grapefruit notes. Clean, crisp, bright finish. This one surprised me. Not usually a big fan of Vienna Lagers or Red Star, but this is really good. Naka (426), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 26, 2008 Courtesy of Nate. Pours a deep amber copper color. The is a small fizzy bone white... less than 1 finger. A very sweet and grassy aroma. A light hoppy bitterness in there as well. The flavor is very grainy. A bit of grassy hops and kind of spicy. A fully flavor that leaves some of the spicy bitterness on the tongue. A pretty average body. Not usually a fan of the lagers, but this is pretty decent, especially for a Vienna. Dogbrick (2266), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 24, 2006 Sample at the brewpub. Pours a brownish-amber color with a medium thin tan head. Thin rings of lacing. Sweet malty aroma with hints of nuts and hops. Medium body with a sweet character, consisting mainly of malt and caramel flavors. The finish is mostly sweet but there are touches of hops here and there. Doesn’t hold a candle to Eliot Ness but it’s alright. boto (1224), Granby, Connecticut, USA Jan 24, 2005 Draught at the Brewery: I found this beer to be pretty decent. It poured a dark amber color with some head. It left a bit of lacing on the glass. There was a somewhat sweet aroma to it, mainly of caramel malts. The taste was good, with a bit of maltiness and a slight hop finish.
