DJMonarch (6036), Northwich, Cheshire, England Aug 28, 2009 Sampler at the Redfish New Orleans Brewhouse, Boulder 12/10/2008 (As Baby Tap Dark Dark Brown)
Big smoked malt aroma. Dark coloured and smooth on the palate with a crisp dry and slightly bitter full malt finish. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Oct 9, 2008 Tap @ brewpub. Dark color, medium off-white head. Aroma is slight smoked, malty, coffee. Bit smokey taste, malty. Decent stuff. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Nov 6, 2006 on tap-pours a creamy tan head, black color with red tint. Aroma is dark malt-coffee/chocolate. Taste is smokey, dark malt-coffee/chocolate, slight hops bitterness. Medium/full body, OK carbonation. Not my style but nice. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Apr 26, 2006 4 oz sampler at the brewpub 4/14/06: Dark with a tan head. Surprisingly smoky aroma. Thick and soupy ... almost a whiskey essence. Way too heavy for this hot day. Ungstrup (14754), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 14, 2005 An opaque brown beer with a disappearing brown head. Both the flavor and aroma have notes of chocolate and prunes, as well as hints of sourness. mj (4975), Colorado, USA Jan 10, 2005 Nose is milky coffee and roasted malts, smoke in the flavor but not the nose. Light smoke overall, which is good, lets the malts and the hops perform. Roasted grains and some scotch in the finish. OlJuntan64 (1267), Perth, Australia Apr 16, 2004 On Tap: Opaque red brown under a small short lasting beige head. Medium butterscotch and coffee aroma (where's the smoked?). Body is of medium fullness, smooth with a touch of astringency. An old fireplace smoked character comes through in the flavour along with coffee and low sweetness medium bitter roasted malt. There's something else there I can't quite identify - flinty earthy and even metallic? Not unpleasant slightly acrid bitter finish whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 15, 2004 Very dark brown with amber edges and an off-white head. Subtle hint of campfire smoke or, more to the point, a wildfire, in the nose. Smoke is more prominent in the flavor and marries well with some additional malts. No sourness to speak of, but I prefer my porters nice and roasty like this one. My favorite beer sampled at Redfish.
