The nose on this beer is really nice with aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, and just a slight bit of roast. The palate is soft and fat on the tongue with good chocolate malt flavors, a touch of coffee, and slight roasty bitterness. Blackhook Porter finishes with more chocolate malt character up front, and is balanced with just enough grassy hop bite.
This is a soft, chocolately brown porter with enough flavor to please a seasoned beer geek, yet approachable enough for a novice. This beer is exceptional on draught at the Catiqua Public House attached to the brewery in Portsmouth, and it is a very nice beer in the bottle as well. This beer would work well with a number of dishes. I enjoy soft brown porters like this with grilled and barbecued meats or chicken. It would also make a fantastic beer to have with desert of chocolate pudding. with a dollop of fresh whip cream. By far my favorite Red Hook beer, and one that just might find its way back into my beer fridge.

Flavors are nice and malty, roasted with a touch of sweetness. Very drinkable. TheBeerGenius (153), Erie/Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Nice roasted malt flavor with balanced hop bite. Not much head but good carb to the end. Very good. barleyPops (1081), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 2, 2005 Looks like coca cola when poured. Thin tan head. Aroma is... weird. Still trying to place something in the aroma... Smoke? Roast? It’s very funky though. Taste is light dry chocolate and coffee, with a bit of smoke in the finish. There are certainly better porters out there. I’d take a warm Fullers over a cold Blackhook any day. From Grapevine in Austin.
