This beer looks like a Porter should look, smells like it should smell. Too bad it just has a little wateriness to it, or this would be one of my favorites. robforbes (1099), Bremerton, Washington, USA

smell - alcohol, hints of cocoa, roasted nuts.

for a porter this one is quite weak. portermax55 (118), Canterbury, Connecticut, USA

Aromas of coffee beans with hints of chocolate. Flavor of sweet chocolate with little roasted malts normally found in a good porter. Very light, watered-down mouthfeel. Not what I expected in a porter. SuzyGreenberg (1368), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 12, 2007 Updated: Apr 24, 2009Bottle. Disappointing product from an otherwise top-notch brewery. Pours very dark with no head. Strong anise aroma, very thin taste. Some coffee/caramelish flavors right at the end, but too little, too late. Nothing to see here, move along. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 3, 2007 Bottle purchased at the Rock and Roll Hotel, post-consumption of a fully expired SNPA. Nose of red berries, wet bread, and hickory smoked meat. Not enough malty girth. Flavor confirms this, being mostly weak folgers and licorice, possibly sarsaparilla more accurately. Plastic and wood before the rather thin-hearted finish; palate is prickly and very conservatively medium bodied. Pulses predictably with that distinct love-it or hate-it lactose sweetness that too often dominates the smoky robustness of good porter. A distinctly unimposing example. anders37 (4700), Malmö, Sweden
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 21, 2007 Cask @ GBBF 2007. Pours an almost black color with a small off-white head. Roasted malty chocolate aroma. Sweet roasted malty chocolate flavor with some hoppy hints. Sweet roasted malty finish with hints of chocolate in the aftertaste. troopie (885), USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 20, 2007 Bottle. Black with thick foamy tan head. Chocolaty malty nose. Sweetish flavour, with notes of chocolate, toffee and unsweetened coffee. Bittersweet chocolate finish with a rather thin body. Drink this if you can find it. It’s a worthy black porter.
