Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Poured from a bottle [Batch 08-0410]. Pours black with beige head. Aroma of light chocolate and earthly hops. Enjoyable coffee nose. Taste light coffee and bitter chocolate malts. Dry finish of coffee. Overal a good beer for the money.

22 oz bottle courtesy of Maniac. Roast with some coffee and vanilla in aroma. Black with medium creamy tan head. Light body with creamy mouthfeel. Roast, caramel, and reserved coffee in flavor. The coffee comes out more as the beer warms. Finish is dry and moderately bitter.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours mahogany out of the bottle and settles in a solid opaque black underneath an off-white head that recedes slowly to a small cap, leaving sporadic lacing. The aroma is light and roasty with lots of dark malts and the roasted coffee showing out fairly well. There is also some chocolaty sweetness thrown in as well. The taste seems to have a little less coffee and is dominated more by the dark roasted malts. The chocolate sweetness is hanging around on the palate in the middle before the finish which has a slight espresso bitterness. The mouthfeel is light for the style with moderate carbonation. This is one of the better Redhook offerings I’ve had though it still doesn’t quite measure up to some of the better coffee stouts I’ve had. Overall a good beer though.

Bottle, batch 08-0410 - Probably my final beer before another 2 month respite. Nice dark black appearance with a thin but unrelenting top of light tan foam. The aroma is surely laced with coffee. But that earthy bean gets lost in roasty bitterness in the drink, with more baking chocolate than java. Enjoyable brew, though. (#3533, 2/24/2009)

Bomber, batch 08-0410, dated Oct 09, 08. Clear dark brown, almost black, with a tight, thin, brown head. Coffee nose, rich roasty malt. Rich coffee and, to a lesser degree, bittersweet chocolate flavors. Body is a tad thin, not quite watery but getting there. Decent.

22 oz bottle, pours a near-black with a thin tan head. aroma of stout and coffee, some green astringency likely from american hops varieties. no alcohol heat, but the body is a little thin - dry and coffee-like. over-attenuated perhaps, but perhaps it’s just the coffee additions. roast and hops apparent, and only medium bodied. enjoyable but not extraordinary.

Bottle, 650ml. Purchased at Harris Teeter in Ballantyne (Charlotte, NC). Pours tar, tan head. Aroma is coffee, molasses, pine, alcohol, chocolate, anise. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, anise, bread, pine, bitter. Oily mouth feel. This is close to an imperial stout.

22 oz bottle, batch 08-0410, dated Oct 08 08. Pours brown with a smallish dark brown head that quickly diminishes.

The aroma is very subdued - sweet chocolate and grains with a touch of coffee (probably because I’m looking for it).

The flavor is sweet bakers chocolate and roasted malts with some chalky acidic bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery.

Overall, this is not very good. It has a bunch of off-notes, and where’s the coffee? I can maybe find a little, but only because I’m looking so hard.
