Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

22 oz bottle, batch 08-0410, dated Oct 08 08. Pours brown with a smallish dark brown head that quickly diminishes.

The aroma is very subdued - sweet chocolate and grains with a touch of coffee (probably because I’m looking for it).

The flavor is sweet bakers chocolate and roasted malts with some chalky acidic bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery.

Overall, this is not very good. It has a bunch of off-notes, and where’s the coffee? I can maybe find a little, but only because I’m looking so hard.

Sampled on 2/20/2008. This stout pours a deep black color from a 22oz bottle. Small sized beige foamy head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee with some roasty malts and sweetness. A medium bodied stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee, with touch of vanilla and fairly sweet. The hops are earth and floral. An interesting stout, the coffee flavors are fairly forward but aren’t as obtrusive as some, there is a lot of sweetness at the finish and middle to balance the coffee bitterness at the start. Nice balance and the carbonation is decent. The memory of the old version of this beer is somewhat the same as the new version, i.e. it tastes about the same. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

bottle - Pours very dark brown with a one finger tan head. It smells of coffee and roast malt. The flavor is similar though it struck me as too light on the malt and surprisingly thin. There’s a slight sourness or acidity to it that didn’t go well. The finish is heavy roast and some hops bitterness. It’s still fairly good but could have been better.

Bottle from Belmont Party. Poured black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium roasted balanced flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable complex beer.

Very decent single stout. Coffee aroma and taste, at a quite acceptable level of drinkability. Pours black with massive white head.Above average mouthfeel. First is bitterness, then malt, then coffee, add second helping and repeat.

By far the best Redhook makes...pours a rich roasty black with brown fluffy head. The nose is very darkly roasted barley, burnt coffee, espresso, chocolate, and cream. The flavors follow pretty much in lock step...touches of burnt grain and acidic coffee grounds in the background, but not really that distracting. OK
