The nose is very darkly roasted barley, burnt coffee, espresso, chocolate, and cream. The flavors follow pretty much in lock step...touches of burnt grain and acidic coffee grounds in the background, but not really that distracting. OK tturner (106), , Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2009 good first 2/3rds but the last 1/3 is thin, astringent, acidic and bitter. slight notes of maltyness, burned coffee on the front, but by the time I start to pick out individual flavors, the acidic finish wells up and overwhelms them. Was hoping for better. mybrainhurts (214), North Dakota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2009 Dark roasted coffee, chocolate, minerals and earth in the nose. Strong flavors of roasted bitter coffee, unsweetened chocolate, and burnt toast. Actually, this is quite good. One complaint I do have is the watery mouthfeel. Overall, Nice. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2009 ~Pours pitch black with big creamy chocolate shake colored head that leaves lacing.
~Chocolate malt scent with sugar and light coffee.
~Coffee is strong in the flavor, heavy bitterness with some malts and chocolate.
~Thick feel, alcohol tingles on tongue. Bitter finish.
~Respectable beer! I wasnt sure what to expect. This is very enjoyable. At $3.33 I will have to get another! mcox90 (649), Wilton, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 8, 2009 22 oz bottle. Pours a black color with mahogany highlights. A gentle pour will still get you a thick tan head. Spotty tan lacing. Nose was roasted malts and bakers chocolate. Didn’t get much in the way of coffee. I rated the palate a 4 for smoothness and drinkabilty, but was a little disappointed in the fact that it was a bit thin. Would have expected a stout to be more substantial. Flavor was all roasted malt and semi sweet chocolate. Maybe a hint of coffee. Very nice. SODAK14 (107), Rapid City, South Dakota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 7, 2009 As you would guess, this beer is BLACK and has a small tan head. Good beer with meat from the grill. Not a beer to drink all night long but really has a place in your fridge. guzzler67 (1283), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 5, 2009 Pitch black with a small tan head and a moderate amount of lacing. No mistaking the coffee in the aroma, abetted by roasted malts and some bittersweet chocolate. A generous amount of hops help keep this stout from becoming too heavy. The result is a smooth, slightly sweet, woodsy, full bodied, coffee bean intense taste with a bitter, long lasting finish. JB175 (1664), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 5, 2009 Darker brown with a big coffee aroma - probably of Southeast Asian or African variety. Flavor is big on the coffee with a hint of earth and chocolate. By far the best Redhook brew I’ve had.
