Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Pours very dark brown with lighter accents and a a tall, foamy, long lasting tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, coffee, autumn leaves, caramel, bitter hops and some grain. Flavor is sweet coffee, roast, a hint of cocoa, a little toffee, and some metallic grain notes. Hop bitterness as well as a fair amount of char is present. Finish is dark roast coffee, slightly burnt brownies and some bitter hops. Palate is creamy atfirst leading to a slick then drying finish.

Brewed 10-08. Batch 08-0410. Pour is nearly black with garnet highlights and a light tan, average, creamy, pillowy head which settles in time to small frothy layer and leaves some tight lace. Nose is somewhat faint with some milk chocolate, light maple, light roasted grains, and hints at moderately roasted coffee beans. Flavor is roasted walnuts, moderately roasted coffee beans, light unsweetened chocolate, and hints at smoke and maple. Palate is soft to lively, medium, and watery/lightly silky/drying. Finishes drying with a bit of earthy hop bitterness, dry roasted coffee beans, and light notes of dry roasted walnuts. I had this a few months ago when it was fresher and I remember it being sweeter and more balanced but now the dry, coffee notes are too dominant. Certainly made with good coffee but the stout base is a bit lacking. Surprisingly the coffee acidity is minimal but the coffee flavors linger in the aftertaste. A decent coffee beer which may be better fresh, or maybe this bottle is going bad??

Poured a very dark, almost black color with a thin brown foamy head. Full of flavors which include definite coffee, chocolate, malts, and very roasted taste. Also contained hints of smoke, wood, and sweet caramel. A very smooth brew with minimal carbonation. This was a treat for me.

Bottle thanks to mar. Smell is malts, wood, some smoke, coffee, and roastiness. The look is black in color with a light tan head. Taste is roasty, malts, really really roasty coffee flavor coming through.

Bomber. Poured deep brown, somewhere near single black with a very nice initial cap of tan head. The aroma picked up sweet and sour coffee notes with a bit of chocolate in there.. not too much else, but I enjoyed the coffee. The flavor opened with slightly sour coffee notes rolling into sweeter coffee on the middle.. picked up some coffee and herbal bitterness toward the back and through the medium-length finish. Medium-bodied and drier on the palate with decent character from the coffee.. somewhat one-dimensional, but tasty nevertheless.

22oz bomber. Pours very dark brown - but not quite black and not quite opaque (though close). The head pours up medium in thickness and tan and leaves some tendrils of lace on the glass. The aroma is big chocolate. Second wave is malt sweetness - lactose, too? Third wave has hints of big stout: roast, dark fruit. The flavor starts quite roasty with some notes of chocolate-covered espresso beans. There are some fruity esters that lead into lactose-sweetness at mid-palate along with firm hop bitterness and a dose of strong coffee. The finish is full and all coffee with a subtle depth added by roasted grains that resembles a very-over-cooked chocolate cookie. The mouthfeel is spritzy on the front of the tongue and then lavish and full on the back. Overall, a very nicely made coffee stout.
