Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Twenty-two ounce bottle from Albertsons. Black with a soft brown hue in brighter light. Cream colored head with barely any lacing. Coffee and malt aroma. Mostly coffee. Tasted like it smelled. Lots of coffee and roasted malts. It felt hollow, though. I was expecting a much bigger/better beer.

10/8/08 On draught at the brewhouse, Woodinville, Wa. Aroma is slightly sweet, heavily toasted and roast forward, but with no astringency. Appearance is black with a well maintained tan head. Flavor is slightly grainy, with lots of black coffee malt evident, to the point of being burnt, but not astringent either. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a light roasty graininess, some astringency and low carb texture. Overall, big and interesting, but the toast can be a bit much.

Surprising I found this in my grocery store. Pours out a dark black color with a tan head on it. Smell is full of roasted malts, coffee, some light toffee hints, and chocolate. Pretty good. Taste is smooth and rich, pretty thick as well. Some nice full bodied roasted malts going on here. A good beer, and certainly one of the better ones found in a Harris Teeter. I should be buying more of it, but I buy guitars instead.

Bottle Batch 08-0410 from Oct 2008. Pours a very dark brown colour with a foamy milk chocolate head. The head dissolves quickly but leave a film and ring. Cola carbonation. Aroma is roasted malt and sweet chocolate plus a hint of acidic coffee. Burnt malt in the taste, plus good bitterness from the coffee. Lighter palate makes it easy to drink.

Bottle (22oz). Shared by garthicus with me and blankboy. Batch 08-0410. Clear, but near opaque ruby-black, average slow-diminishing light brown head. Aroma of nutshell, strong cold coffee, a bit of dry bitterness. Taste - same, but more bitterness, dry nutshell and coffee grounds, some alcohol and a bit of burnt malt in the linger. Average body, a little acidic and lactic - pretty solid.

Pours black with a 2 inch tan head that holds its own long enough. Vanilla cream chocolate aroma. Very stout flavor of coffee and sugar. Not bitter. Refreshing palate for such a heavy beer. Clean and powerful. It satisfies.

Pours black, with a small brown head. Aroma is chocolate, malts, and coffee. Flavor is roasty, with a smooth, light coffee flavor hidden in within blasts of chocolate. To be honest it was a surprise coming from the Redhook brewery, a good surprise!
