Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Great beer! bottle bought at Whole Foods in West Los Angeles. Pours a tarry black with a light brown head that is mostly diminishing. Smell is of chocolate malt, with lots of coffeee in the aroma. Taste is of chocolate - sweet at first and then bitter at the ending. Coffee is also noticeable in the taste. Syrupy texture with lively carbonation

Pours black with a short lived light tan head into a snifter. Smell is dark roasted chocolatey malt. A bit of coffee and chocolate notes as well. Taste is balanced roasty malt, bitter chocolate and dry cocoa flavors with noticeable and pleasant coffee flavor as well as some charred, lightly burnt malt. Smooth, lightly oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Nice and slightly dry and full flavored. Pretty good actually.

Bomber born in October 2008. Pours a dark brown with a small head. Y’know, for a coffee stout there isn’t much coffee in the aroma. I do get tasty hints at molasses and earth along with subdued suggestions of coffee, but I also detect some metal and corn in the aroma. The palate is medium and fizzy. The flavor begins roasty and bittersweet with hints of molasses, earth, and fair coffee. The finish is where most of the astringency rises with hints of metal. This is a good drink, I finished the bomber with no qualms. However, the amount of coffee in the aroma and flavor is very low for a proclaimed coffee stout and touches of flaws nipped my palate here and there.

Dark brown pour with tight foamy head that lasts. Aroma of deeply roasted malt and coffee, and some dark chocolate. Flavor is much the same, but a bit weaker. A bit thin on the palate. A good, but not great stout.
