Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

black with decent lacing under a medium sized creamy brown head. aroma is of chocolate and coffee but is very subdued. also hints of hops. very carbonated and thin mouthfeel. the coffee doesn’t really make a big appearance here. average at best. batch 08-0410.

22oz bomber, OCT 08 08. Black with deep ruby highlights and a one finger tan head, fair retention. Nose of cold coffee and roasted malts, light dark chocolate up front. There’s none of the scorched burnt malt character here--only the slightest hint of smoke and char. Ah, I spoke too soon. The flavor does have the black patent burnt flavor in the backend, but other than that, not much different than the aroma. More chocolate than coffee, I guess, but that’s it. Low to moderate carbonation with a medium body. Can’t pick up on any alcohol, but then again it’s only 7%. A pretty good stout with coffee, but nothing super mega crazy.

Bottle, batch 08-0410 from Plano Beverage in Plano, TX. Pours deep black with faint red hues, tan head. Aroma of roasted barely and coffee. Flavor is nice, roasted barely and coffee, some chocolate, nice balanced bitter. Mouthfeel is med-heavy with medium carbonation. Over all it is tasty......decient strong stout.

Wow, RedHook is trying to make a beer that doesn’t suck. Let’s see how they do. Pours almost completely black with a thick, tan head. Faint aroma of coffee and some fruits. Taste is kind of like a regular. Sorta burnt with coffee, etc and so forth. A Roasty, coffee slightly sour finish. Mouthfeel is pretty thing. I guess this is straddling the line between imperial stout and dry stout. It doesn’t suck, but it’s not good. Got it?

Bottle from South Bay Drugs. Has a rich and delightful aroma of roast black coffee and perfectly toasted malt. The stout has a creamy head but will disappear to a ring of sticky lacing while the liquid remains a solid jet black color. The flavor is simple with a touch of roast coffee and cocoa that blend well and balance for a smooth finish and delicate palate.

The head fades away rather quickly, but not completely. There is a nice thin layer of off-brown head to make this beer look pretty good. The beer is completely black. Ah the darker the beer the sweeter the juice, right? Well, I think so! The beer looked a little thin when I was pouring it, but looks can be deceiving! A faint chocolate, coffee, and sweet aroma. There is also a little roast aroma. A nice complex aroma! The beer smells pretty good, but there a more pungent stouts out there. I wonder if it is still brewed with Starbucks coffee. Nice roast coffee and chocolate taste. I am gonna have to let this warm up to get everything. I am noticing a nice roast flavor in the aftertaste. The flavor is nice and complex. The beer is too thin! I didn’t like this part. I noticed it as I was pouring it. I don’t like the ABV! 7%? Please, give me a stout with a rough alcohol taste. It mixes well with the roast, and coffee! I am not kidding about that! I love them like that! The sweet chocolate flavor comes through a lot as the beer warms up. This beer has a nice subtle and complex aroma! The flavor is the best part of the beer! Nice and complex flavor that has the smoke/roast flavor along with the coffee and chocolate. I love how this beer keeps my tastebuds guessing. Overall, pretty good brew.

Clear black pour, small brownish head. Some roast malt, coffee and mocha in the nose. Really kind of thin bodied. OK roast malt, mocha, coffee flavors. Everything rather subdued. Nothing lingering and a bit watery of a finish. I’d say it is very drinkable though. Probably the best from Red Hook, but I don’t care for that many of their brews. I think this is a bit poorly classified. Almost more of a black lager.
