The aroma has notes of rich and earthy African coffees in addition to bittersweet chocolate, smoky malts, non-aromatic tobacco, vanilla, oxidized and cardboardy esters and some acidic twang.
The taste starts with a heavy cafe mocha overtone of espresso and chocolate supported by vinous and well aged stout characteristics. The oxidation and musty notes work well with the coffee tones IMO. A touch of plum and lactic acid adds a firm roundness to the palate. The finish is quite bitter still even after the aging process. The mouth feel is a tad thin but is silky oily which made it okay.
A hint more sweetness and less acidity and I would have been in heaven. Still I was very happy to finally get a chance to rate this after all those years which at passed since I had it fresh. GG (1678), NorCal, California, USA

Incredible aroma of chocolate, huge coffe notes, some maple/toffee & vanilla too. Appearance...jet black. Mouthfeel is like satin, very smooth, very creamy. The flavor profile is not as explosive as the nose, which was slightly disappointing. With that being said, coffee beans, chocolate, sweet malt, licorice and vanilla are most pronounced. Not real bitter, but bitter enough to notice. Overall, quite an enjoyable beer. gollitogarcia (11), Texas, USA
| 5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Aug 12, 2006 This is a stout with balls. Big hairy balls. One of the finest microbrews ever allowed for mere mortals. If only any other stout could match the perfection. The multiple colors of this fine stout boggles the mind like vintage 60’s LSD. Only stout that I’ve found that comes close to even teasing would be Rogue Shakespeare Stout. Drink up and trip out. jingajinga (12), USA

The flavor is bland compared to the aroma, although the coffee comes out more in the flavor. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA

Nice malty chocoaltey aroma, with hints of vanilla and some coffee. Big Chocolate and coffee flavor, accented by some vanilla, some toffee, and some nutty flavors. Excellent malty flavor as well. Kind of dry on the finish but all in all a great beer. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA
