In 1989, when this beer was still known as Ballard Bitter, and I was almost 21, this was my first microbrew. I was hooked, and eagerly awaited the opportunity to try it again should it ever move back East. My how times have changed!

(draft) Lightly hazed straw body topped by a white head. Aroma is meidum sweet, grapefruit, light biscuit. Taste is medium sweet, grapefruit, light biscuit, caramel. Light-medium body, some crispness. Good transition beer.

Yellow golden with a small frothy white head. Some grassy and citrus hop notes in the aroma. Crisp bracing of vegetal hop flavors with an equally unimpressive malt balance. Finish is somewhat doughy and watery. Mouthfeel is a little light.

On tap at City Crab & Lobster in NYC. Quite unique to find this on tap here in NYC because places that carry Red Hook normally would have the ESB not the IPA. Pours a golden yellow with a dissipating head and a nice lacing on top. Nice light smell of citrus. An okay IPA but the hops did not come through here. The floral hop flavors are just too mild and dissappointing. Below average for the style IPA but still drinkable and refreshing. However, it is the best thing on tap at this restaurant so I’ll get it again if I eat here.

Nothing really wrong with this version of IPA. On tap at the brewery it’s dandy. I buy it in bottles when on sale and enjoy it thoroughly.

Good, nothing outstanding about this beer, just simply what you would expect from a beer that claims to be an IPA. Nicely hopped, nicely malted, nice colour, flavour, smell, just nothing that blows me away. Good.

Clear gold colour with thin white head. Mild hop nose. Mikd bitter hop taste with lingering bitter finish.
