Commercial Description:
Redhook Ale Brewery recently released its first ever barleywine, Treblehook (10.1% ABV). Treblehook has aged since March ’07 and has a rich aroma of malt with spicy and fruity hop notes. It’s available in southern New Hampshire only in select pubs on draft and in retail establishments in four-packs.

Light brown color with a small head. Aroma is very balanced. Caramel malts and detectable hops. Flavor is smooth and sweet and well balanced. Good solid flavors. Relatively easy to drink and very enjoyable. Well done Redhook!

This has a pretty good aroma, some molasses and perhaps a hint of passion fruit. The flavor is good as well. A lot of malt, but a good hop bitterness too. Much better than I anticipated from red hook.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, pine, resin, slight dark ripe fruit, and a hint of citrus. Poured orange/amber in color with a medium-sized, dense, creamy, tan/beige head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is medium to heavily bitter and slightly sweet. Tastes of hops, pine, resin, slight caramel, slight malts, and a hint of wood. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Hops, pine, and resin finish is lightly dry. Tastes like more than 52 IBUs. 10.1%ABV is completely hidden. A nice, hoppy, barley wine.

Bottle from the Orland Park, IL, Binny’s Beverage Depot: It has a nice pour, a clear copper body with a thick ecru head that pastes the glass with lace. The aroma is caramel coated cherries and apples with light floral scents. The flavor is caramel with a rudely bitter and alcoholic finish. The commercial description says this was aged for over two years, but this seems pretty green to me.

Clear copper color with a tan head. Nice piney, floral hop aromas with caramel and mild booze. Medium body. Good flavors of pine and floral hops on a big sweet caramel malt base. Mild to medium heat to finish. Enjoyed this one.

22 oz. bottle picked up at Greens on Buford Highway. I loved their coffee stout, I am surprised to see that this limited edition got such a low rating. Nice balance between the sweet malts and the citrus hops! I enjoy the aroma very much. Very fruity sweet citrus hop aroma. Fairly pungent brew. I don’t see what the low ratings on aroma are all about?! Fairly translucent copper brown color with a small head. Looks average for a barley wine i.e. doesn’t have anything special going for it. Flavor is decent. Decent citrus flavor that develops. A warm alcohol feeling at first but this settles out. The bittering hop is quite nice. I would say for a barley wine the hops dominate. Not much of a strong malt presence. It has a creamy palate, which means the malts are definitely there, but not in terms of flavor. Fairly hoppy, makes a fairly good Imperial/Double, but I feel the malts are lacking.
