Braincage1 (137), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Nov 6, 2009 Bottle. A clear ruby brown beer with a thin tan head. Combination of caramel, nuts and light bitter chocolate makes for a nice aroma. Strong sour vegetable flavor to start but mellows out to a more well rounded but diluted roasted peanut flavor. 22415brewery (57), redmond, Washington, USA Nov 3, 2009 Perhaps the most interesting and balanced beer in the Redhook lineup, Winterhook features a fairly complex malt profile with varying degrees of caramel sweetness and a touch of toasty characer. The hopping effectively balances the malt and amazingly enough this probably has the most malt character, body, and mouthfeel of all their beers. Since it’s brewed for only one season it’s essential to consume it when released. This beer tends to lose the subtle malt characters over time. Not a bad showing overall. daknole (2801), Plantation, Florida, USA Oct 30, 2009 Brown pour. Hoppy aroma with some nuts and caramel. Hops are nicely done in this with caramel and roast also showing themselves well. Leighton (234), New York, New York, USA Oct 26, 2009 A very decent winter ale. Shared a bottle with the GF the other night. Pours a nice amber-brown with a soft white head. Nose of roasted and sweet malts. Flavor is sweet up front with notes of caramel and maple, while beneath the surface lies the roasty foundation.Finish is pretty smooth and comforting. Nice beer. billdrinksbeer (18), Washington DC, USA Oct 25, 2009 Bottle. Oddly hoppy aroma for a beer in this style. Smells faintly like a DFH 60 minute combined with the smell of wet leaves. Pours a rich chestnut brown with a half finger width of cream colored head that dissipates quickly. Taste is at first slightly malty with a faint taste of cider spices (a la traditional winter brews). Mouthfeel is very thin, almost watery, and the back taste is almost non-existent. Not a bad beer, but I’ve had both better winter brews and English strong ales. ericsondr (8), Camano Island, USA does not count Oct 24, 2009 Very subtle aroma... very subtle flavor. Slight orange-like spicy notes with a medium-ish body. olilitewu (4), Seattle, USA does not count Oct 22, 2009 This beer has aroma of pine. It has nice roasty body, but not malty enough to impress me. dry finish Jblauvs (530), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Oct 22, 2009 Brown pour with a fizzy head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is mild spicey hop with a wierd urine tinge. Caramel malt as well. Flavor is mostly some flabby caramel malt and spicey hop but the two never really come together. Not very good
