| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 9, 2006 The Redhook Winterhook pours a malty color with a clingy head that leaves a heavy residue on the glass. It has a sweet taste without being spicy like a lot of other winter brews tend to be. The beer itself is not a heavy beer, as it has a seemingly light volume. Not your typical winter beer. sandygoonie (27), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/20 | Jan 27, 2006 This beer is a dark amber beer with a strong malty aroma. It’s medium bodied, smooth, and easy to drink. This beer has a roasty taste and a quick, dry finish with a slightly strange roasty after-taste. A decent beer, but not for those that aren’t already fans of Redhook in general. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 25, 2006 From a 12 oz. long neck brown bottle with a bottled date on the label, 11/28/05. Made a average appearance, poured a clear red hued amber with a small pale tan head that quickly reduced to a thin lacing and a minimal amount of sticking. Had a citric fruity aroma with traces of caramel maltiness. Moderate carbonation and a smooth, light medium bodied mouth feel, decent drinkability. Taste had a mellow citric bitterness, a little fruitiness, a underlining toasted maltiness and just a hint of alcohol in a dry citrus finish.

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 25, 2006 Winterhook pours to a beautiful bright, deep garnet color with a creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. What once was a nose rich with sweet, chocolate malt, caramel malt, toasty, and roasty aromas, has been replaced with slight sweet caramel aromas and a hint of roast. What was once a palate of rich, delicious, sweet chocolate and sticky malt flavors, has been replaced with very muted, bland malt flavor, hints of caramel, and a thin body. The finish that one time was heavy with sweet malt, roasty notes, and a warming, soothing burn, has been replaced with a slight roasty finish, and no burn.
This beer is a huge disappointment, and a shell of what it once was. I at one time looked forward every winter for this beer. Years ago, this was a wonderful winter warmer with great malt flavor and character. I guess I will never learn. Each year I try a sample or two, hoping Winterhook will return to its former glory, and each year I am disappointed. While I might still enjoy a Blackhook Porter, Winterhook has proven to be a dud, year after year. This is a very weak and timid example of a winter warmer/old ale. I would not recommend buying this beer. There are far too many better examples out there, to waste your money on this one.

I’m not good at reviewing beers like some people on this site, but after 700 I hope I can judge a beer halfway. This is a solid one that lights a cowboy’s fire at midnight on a cold moonless night.
