highlandlad (1207), Sydney, Australia Aug 20, 2008 Typically solid interpretation of the style by Dave Hollyoak. Surprisingly sessionable for the hefty 8% abv. Wouldn’t have guessed it was that strong, but for the after-effects. Could use a few more IBUs to really stand out, but I guess there’s a limit to what Redoak’s clientèle will tolerate. Turbid orange with a massive lacing head. Usual over-chilled-therefore-muted aroma but clean. Soft creamy mouthfeel. Grapefruit acids, passionfruit, lychee, etc. Tart but not quite bitter enough IMO. Very drinkable, but short of the standard of Murrays Icon 2IPA. (Draught at the brewpub)
Aarleks (402), Sydney, Australia May 17, 2008 Tap at Redoak: After the standard IPA I thought this might be a ripper, but in the end it seemed like the same beer to me. Hazy orange with an off-white head. In the nose there’s a touch of sweaty foot over plenty of piney hop notes and citrus. Slightly cardboardy in the mouth but with plenty of chewy pine and citrus flavours that last. Very nive, but I didn’t really put it on a DIPA rating in terms of hop assertiveness. Oh well. bluevegie (1853), Perth, Australia Mar 24, 2008 Aroma stands out as it should though I was expecting more in the body and taste. Apricots in the taste with a bitterness that lasts well, body is only medium to full and the 8% alcohol is hardly noticeable. Wasn’t disappointed but was hoping for a bigger beer. MBison (449), Southern Highlands, Australia Mar 4, 2008 Draught at the Redoak (pint). The trendiness of double IPA seems to have spread to the Redoak, but they are the last people I would expect to be selling the stuff in pints! at 8% that’s hardly responsible service of alcohol! But I guess at $13 a pint it is as you can only afford one a visit. Arrived a light orangey bronze with a creamy white head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of resinous hops (but not the huge assault you would expect from a double IPA) with orange citrus, passion fruit, apricots, canned peaches, sticky toffee, caramel malts and lightly burnt butter. Flavor was resinous hops with good bitterness, sweet caramel malts, passionfruit, grapefruit, apricots, and a touch of toffee. Very well hidden alcohol content. Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation, oily texture, creamy/dry mouthfeel and a great lasting finish. Not a bad double IPA but at $13 a pint I would stick with a “bomber” of Murrays 2IPA for $17 – much better value for money.
