ALLOVATE (1127), Perth, Australia Sep 26, 2008 A rush of milk and dark, rich chocolate, cocoa and Kopiko candies, fresh stripped vanilla husks and a strange hint of fresh baked field mushrooms and camphor. So black it mirrored my reflection with a sharp clarity. A tan head rises and falls with equal haste to settle a little foam ring on the meniscus. From a silky well rounded aroma to an aggressive bitter malt palate. Cheap, burnt coffee beans, weedy Wild rocket and acrid herb flavours, bitter burnt grains, a husky rough back end of burnt wood and burnt caramel with mild molasses notes. Palate is quite light, the carbonation is fizzy on just the tip of the tongue to smooth out as it drifts across the palate. An astringency grips the swallow and twists it before it exits to head south. This was just a little painful to drink, really. It starts off with so much promise, just to disappoint in the mouth. nate2g (245), Brisbane, Australia Dec 20, 2008 Dark beer with low head. Aroma of cocoa, coffee and dark fruit. Flavour is less impressive and falls flat and unbalanced. Too much cocoa flavour and very thin and watery on the plate. A shame too as I had high expectations for this one. TimE (1111), Tokyo, Japan Jun 15, 2008 Dark chocolate, raspberries and dark cherries dominate the beer, but virtually no head and flat carbonation distract from what could be a great beer. More CO2 in bottle would have brough this beer to life. gam (679), brisbane, Australia Jun 15, 2008 Strong thick biege head on very dark stout, some good carbonation.Lovely strong aroma chocolate(dark) and(light)malty, has a coffee mild note.Flavour coffeee rich and quite good, chocolate is milky taste, very plesant, has a faint bitter of coffee, finish is coffee bitter smooth chocolate. Muggus69 (293), Sydney, Australia May 7, 2008 250ml bottle from bottle’o. Deep brown body, near opaque, tan collar. Roasted malt nose, bitter cocoa, strong mocha coffee and wood, a slightly vinous/lactic sharpness detectable. Body disappointingly thin, prickly carbonation, lactic note manifests itself early on. Abrupt dark chocolate early on palate, restrained wood and coffee flavours, a touch of liquorice and brown sugar still not enough to entice. Milky dry finish, reasonably bitter. Needs more oompf and more chocolate.
