Betty (232), Walgett, NSW, Australia Oct 20, 2004 At least you can get this in a half litre, but if you’re up that end of town, just go to the Lowenbrau... this is pretty crap and mildly tasteless. I really hate this place. The guy keeps opening the door for you as you leave. WHO CARES?
bozoNZ (393), Christchurch, New Zealand Jun 1, 2007 Tap at the brewpub. Deep copper bronze with a decent head. Subtle spice, clove & banana flavours, less so on the nose. Reasonalby structured if a bit short. bridge (659), Sydney, Australia May 27, 2006 This baby brother to the doppelbock seems to pale in comparison. Pretty weak aroma of banana toffee, which strangely enough don’t really transfer through on tasting. Decent balance to the flavour with some tartness and bitterness. The palate is somewhat rough, with the alcohol too obvious and a bit rubbery in the finish. Stew41 (907), Caulfield, Australia Jan 31, 2006 Consumed too cold (on tap) but quality is still very evident. Darkish caramel with a thin head. Nose is surprising subdued, perhaps a victim of the serving temp. Much more happening in the mouth with sweet / earthy malts, stewed fruits and rhubarb. Shows good character. omhper (11033), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 26, 2005 Draught at the brewpub. Cloudy dark amber, rich head. Obvious banna aroma. Medium sweet with clean mouthfeel and notes of toffee. Cloves and marshmallows remains until the finish. Avoids the trap of getting too sweet that many dunkelweizens fall into. mullet (769), Melbourne, Australia Dec 23, 2005 Tap at Redoak. Massive clove and bubble gum aroma, with some oyster sauce in there, was really promising, but, perhaps unsurprisingly, it tastes way too phenolic. Plenty of garam marsala but not enough of that nice sweet wheat malt character. Maybe if they spread the yeast from this one amongst their entire range they’d be about right. I was expecting to really like this, because their regular hefeweizen is quite good, but it’s probably my least favourite Redoak.
