Commercial Description:
To honor a true scholar, the Requiem Espresso Stout’s October release celebrates Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday. Fusing fresh roast espresso beans with malted barley and fresh hops, the Requiem Espresso Stout is a curiously delightful libation that weighs in at 7.5% alcohol by volume. Not your mass-marketed, fizzy-yellow-swill, the Requiem Espresso Stout is instead a rich, medium bodied, viscous treat with hints of dark chocolate, smokiness, and espresso beans.

.On tap @ Blue Palms. Slightly hazed deep ruby (with a flashlight) with a short-lived beige head, to a thin ring and tattered film. Aroma of sweet caramel and cold-pressed coffee. Flavor is a huge mess of cold-pressed coffee again, but not as sweet as the aroma led on. Eventually a tinge of soy comes out. The finish is semi-dry with bitterness at a 2-3. Light to moderate prickly carbonation with a medium body. Kinda one-dimensional, but what’s there is nice.

Bottle; dark brown to black pour with a small to medium tan head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate. Flavor was balanced and not too over the top with the coffee notes. Coffee, caramel, roasted malt, and a bit of cocoa and chalkiness. Finish and after taste was just ok.

Bottle. Pours black with an average, fizzy dark brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (coffee, burnt grain, caramel), little to no hops, light yeast (leather) with notes of tar, wood, and dark fruits. Medium bodied, thin texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

This was a random bottle shared at a tasting which included some of the best beers pretty much ever with a bunch of beers from BeerAdvocate. I vowed never again to confuse who contributed what beer, but here I am forgetting again. Roger (Sandstone on BA) hosted this tasting and I think he may have contributed this, so I’ll thank him for it. Correct me if I’m wrong. Pours dark brown with a small beige head leaving a little froth after it settles. Aroma is lots of coffee and roast. Not too much to it, but good. Flavor is ridiculous coffee and roast. Tiny bit of chocolate too. Mostly coffee though. This is pretty much like drinking a cold cup of carbonated high-quality coffee, which is not really a bad thing in my book. Palate is fairly light and watery compared to what I expected, but this adds to the drinkability a bit. Good beer overall from a brewery I had never heard of.

On tap, LA Beerfest. Tried this after hearing blasphemous comments that this was better than Black Xantus, which was stationed next to Skyscraper. Pour is black, with a small head. Nose is fresh black coffee and a certain earthy quality. Flavor is definitely coffee-dominated, but tasty nonetheless. Palate is too thin, but I found the flavor so pleasant that I quickly forgave this fact. If anything, adding “fullness” to this beer might make it a top-notch coffee stout. NOT better than Xantus, though.

Bottle courtesy of BMan1113VR. Heavy brown color. Red tints as well. Lovely coffee nose. Fresh off the pot smell. And that’s coffee pot. Nice chocolate aroma. Dry coffee taste with a rich cocoa flavor. Very good. Very. Finishes dry coffee.
