Wulfstan (481), California, USA Jun 13, 2008 This is a nice, tasty helles with a strong bready character. It’s slightly darkish gold with a faint haziness. It has a medium, slightly off-white head that slowly dminishes to a thin, permanent top and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is very nice, whole wheat bread, yeasty sourdough, honey, lemon, hints of pine and hefeweizen elements. The taste is a smooth, full-bodied, solid German lager, with a lot of toasty bread, crust, and mild but solid grass, pine, herbs, honey, yeastiness, and apple. It’s smooth and lightly on the oily side, with an engaging zestiness, making it light but tasty, subtly complex, and very satisfying. It has a light bitterness to balance the sweetness and give a light bite in finish. The flavours last well, never degrading.
MoritzF (3926), Ruhrpott, Germany Sep 4, 2008 (bottle) Almost clear, except for some tiny yeast-particles, golden coloured hue with a huge foamy white head. Moderately sweet and aromatic grainy and nutty aroma with a touch of cara-malt and hints of vanilla. Moderately sweet flavour with a balancing level of bitterness, almost medium bodied with a soft, well-carbonated mouthfeel. Robust malty, soft-grainy base with balanced herbal hoppy notes in the wings; quite dry and well-rounded malty sweet and hop bitter finish. Very pleasant Export (12.09.07). IrishBoy (2165), Bakersfield, California, USA Aug 27, 2008 .5 L bottle from Country Club Liquors; Light gusher; foamed up and out of the bottle mouth as opened; spilled about an ounce. Nose of light grassy hops, caramel, and yeasty grain; dark gold with a huge off white head; flavor is mildly sweet caramel malts, and a tiny note of bitterness. Mes_and_Sim (4495), Highgate, Greater London, England Aug 25, 2008 A Mes rate: bottle from Quinns while watching the Super Reds. Very bright clean gold with an impressive white head and plenty of lace. Very well balanced aroma with good grassy hops and bready German malt but there is a delicate but excellent smoky hint that really makes it. The flavour is more of the same but not quite so good. The smoky hint vanished initially but makes a welcome return for the finish. Decent all rounder. Come on United! oh6gdx (6348), Vaasa, Finland Aug 25, 2008 Bottled. Golden colour, small white creamy head. Aroma is hops, malts and some grass. Flavour is much the same. Bigtime grassyness in finish and aftertaste. KimJohansen (4299), Copenhagen V, Denmark Aug 9, 2008 Clear golden with medium white head. Yeasty aroma with caramel notes. Flavor holds caramel malt and grainy notes. Ends sweet.
