maniac (1976), Richmond, Virginia, USA May 12, 2008 Bomber, purchased from the brewpub 01/27/2007 bottle states it was brewed on 08/26/2005. Clear ruby body with no head and some thin legs. Rum soaked fruit aroma, molassas, caramel, and some almost maple hints. Heavy molassas and maple-like flavors. Some earthy hop hints. Upon reading the bottle, apparently brown sugar was added, and thats quite apparent. Medium body and nearly no carbonation. Fairly smooth syrupy finish. Numenor (817), Richmond, Virginia, USA May 12, 2008 2005 bottle. Brownish mahogony body with very minimal head. Heavy malt based aroma, lots of sugar. Very sweet taste, brown sugar with a light fruit hint. Warm ending. Very tasty. Immy (1559), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bomber. Bought this about a year ago at the brewpub, the label says it was brewed on 08/26/05. Pours a lightly hazed dark amber with no head. Very sweet, somewhat boozy nose, spicy and malty, brown sugar is apparent, some berrylike notes. More bitter than expected, an earthy, nutty flavor over dark malt. Slightly astringent, not pleasant, really. The bitter medicinal flavor lasts through the finish. Meh. duff (5405), Sydney, Australia, Surrey, England Feb 16, 2007 Bottle. Another sweet US barleywine. Probably a little too sweet for me. caramelly sweetness from the malt, piney, fruity hop notes. With alcoholic warmth at the end. Probably a little too much for me in terms of the sweetness, but ther is some nice flavours. Kinz (1900), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Feb 4, 2007 Picked up a 22 during the 5th Richmond Gathering pubcrawl. Pours a deep, slightly murky amber, with practically no head. Aroma of thick caramel, molasses, and brown sugar. Very little carbonation. Flavor is sweet dark caramel, sugary finish. There are some hops floating in the background to give a bit of a cooked grapefruit note, but that is almost entirely obliterated by the sugar overload. Not quite there yet, but I hope they keep playing with this style.
