Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned: Seasonal.
"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

0.5 l bottle. Orange color with small head. Sweetish aroma with perfumed goldings hops, fruity esters and rotten egg. Bittersweet flavor with fruity esters as well as tart fruity and resiny hops. Some unclean yeasty and bready fermentation flavors.

This beer reminded me a lot of a mellower version of SNPA. Light gold color with some fizzy white head. Aroma is earthy and piney hops. Flavor is of caramel malts with slight fruit undertone and cascade hop finish. Overall, decent.

Very light golden color with a white head that fades quickly. Bitter sweet hoppy aroma that doesn’t lead to the appropriate taste. Reminds me of drinking Old Style...with a hint of hops!

1 pt. 9 oz (I refuse to do the conversion) pours with fluffy head that flattens quickly. Citrus aroma with some sweet hoppy overtones. Goldenrod, slightly cloudy appearance. No lacing. Initial flavor of sweet malt with caramel, middle palate of citrus and spice and a finish of hops. Good beer but not as hearty as I had hoped for a strong ale and with a much weaker flavor.

Draught. Light golden with white head. Quite thin with malt and some caramel. A bit too short for a winter ale in my opinion.

500 ml. Burnt orange and clear, with a small but lasting foam. Spicy-sweet caramel aroma. Earth-spiced apple flavor front turns to spicy herb, dry wood, evergreeen resin, and tart apple on the ending. Smooth and light-medium bodied with a dry, tingly finish. Looks and tastes like a nice ESB.
