Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned: Seasonal.
"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Oh boy...I didn’t try any of these elf beers last year when I started rating, and now that I have had most of them I see I am not missing much. I will say that all the bottles lined up together create a festive holiday atmosphere in my house. Aroma was mostly grassy hops. Pour was a dark thick gold with no head. Taste was sticky and hoppy. A bit of light malt in the front followed by a hoppy aftertaste with a little burn.

old rating: 7/3/7/3/14 - 3.4. pours semi-cloudy light amber with a thin off-white head, almost no carbonation, and some lacing. smell is light grapefruit, wet ceder wood chips, spice, toffee, burnt sugar, freshly cut christmas tree. taste is oily, spice, fruit, bit of citrus, holly, caramel, somewhat bitter, hopy, and light malt, leaves the mouth on the sticky side.

(Bottled) Clear golden with a medium, frothy and lacy head. Aromatic, strongly woody-hoppy aroma with currants, and some buttery toffee notes. Quite strongly bitter and aromatic, woody-nutty-lemony-hoppy flavor with a long, dry finish. Almost medium-bodied, medium-carbonated palate. Slightly harshly hoppy, but still quite enjoyable for an English ale. A less malty and aromatic version of Special London Ale.

Upon the pour from the 500ml brown bottle, the beer appears a slightly hazy golden amber with a modest off white head that settles quickly, leaving a thin coating of lace upon the glass. Nose has a nice sweet malt aroma, with a pleasant hop flowery tone, citrus like crispness, also a wee bit of bread dough. Front has a delightful malt presence, the hops as spicy as any American IPA, top is medium in feel. Finish has a brisk acidity, the hops pound your taste buds, and the dry aftertaste coats your palate, a “Damn Good” IPA.

Hazy orange color, small white head. Citrusy, bready hoppy (like in APA). Fizzy carbonation. Sweet citrus estery flavor. Estery, a bit sweet in the edges. Nice. Not really a Christmas beer, but good - suprised to see this so low rated here (3.0).

Bottled@SBWF2007. Hazy orange colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is fruity hops, slight grass and nice caramel malts. Also some slight malts. Flavour is spices, fruits and some grass. Pleasant and refreshing.

Pours an amber that is clear with quickly dissipating head. Slightly hopped nose with a sweet edge and caramel influence. Flavor is bitter and sweet at the same time. Feel is slightly touched with bubble. Drinkable, sure. But this bottle cost me $6. For that price I could be getting a Rochefort, a St Bernardus, or a wide array of other home runs. Nice to try, but at this price I would never go back to it.
