Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned: Seasonal.
"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Bottle. Hmm the brewer makes it sound really hoppy in his description but it is far from it. It is ok with malts and a bit of toffee but it is very subdued on the hops. Pours with a copper color and not much of a head. A bit on the thin side as well, so all in all an average beer, nothing to go gaga over.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a low off-white head. Caramel malt aroma with floral and citrus. Caramel malt flavor with grassy, floral hop backing. Slight bitterness. Medium body. LIngering hops.

Pours pale yellow with medium off white head that lasts well. Nose is floral and pine hops. Flavor is well balanced between malt, pine hops, very syrupy and semi-sweet. Finish is bitter and rather oily. Overall brilliant.

Bottle. Pours a sublime gold with nice carbonation and a head of white. Nice lace residue. Aroma is hops and a touch of sour grapefruit. Nice grapefruit and pine flavors, with hints of orange and a tinge of strawberry. Nice mouthfeel. I’m perplexed by the low percentile; this is a great brew.

Honestly, I was expecting a gimick after noticing the elf theme (four winter seasonals with the same nomenclature?) Pours a beautiful amber, fairly clear with a good head. The aroma is hoppy, not in an over-the-top way, but in complexity it’s hard to beat. There’s American citrus, hearth and herbal and something a little fruitier like currants, but all from the hops. Underneath that is a caramel maltiness. The flavor is slightly watery, but I’m still really enjoying this beer. Much better than expected.

Medium amber pour with a good sized head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is cascade hops and malt. Flavor matches the aroma. A hop bitterness is present in the finish. Not a complex brew, but much better than I was expecting based on some reviews here.

Smelled the Cascade hops immediately then looked to find if they were indeed used. Aroma is very enticing with sweet, hoppy, spicy and a little bubble gum notes. Color was a nice brilliant light amber. Nice head retention. Flavor was malty with a nicely balanced bitterness. I thought this would be a gimmicky beer but found it to be a diamond in the rough.

I’ve seen this beer hundreds of times and never bought it becuase I knew it was supposed to be bad. Turns out it’s not that bad. malty and slightly hoppy with piney flavor i think.
