"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurs. Pours clear copper color, with a white head, aroma of hops, citrus, and alcohol. Flavor is citrus, hops, bitter finish. Ok brew, not to harshly bitter.

pours clear copper color, with a small white head, aroma of pine hops, citrus, and alcohol. the flavor is citrusy, pine tasting, very slightly bitter undertones, ok body, a little out of character for its style, ok-good brew.

Pours a clear light orange with a quickly dissipating white head and no lacing. Sweet and citrus in the nose. Slightly sweet on the tongue with an earthy and citrus hop bite at the end. Okay beer.

A really big spicy hop nose is the first to great you here, with some lemon rind notes as well. Light golden with a fair head. Clean with a sweet yet somewhat bland malt palate, somewhat soapy with lemon rind and resiny hop flavorings skirting all around. Medium bitter finish with a light bite. Light to medium bodied.

Bottle. Very, very pale for an Englisg Strong Ale. Honey colored with a patchy film of bubbles. Nose-sweet honey/malt extract nose.Taste-cereal, honey, caramel, surprisingly hoppy for a ESA, dirt, tobacco, surprisingly bitter on the finish. On one hand, the hops and thin malts are nicely paired, on the other, it is too thin and bland. You can’t say that it is one sided though. A decent effort that needs just a little bit of refining to be world class.

I was surprised by this one. Sampled with six "other IPA’s" during an IPA judging. It finished universally ahead of DFH 60, Pyramid Thunderhead, Victory Hop Wallop, and others, and second only to Rogue’s Imperial (I2PA). Who’d a thought.
