Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned: Seasonal.
"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

25oz. bottle. Translucent orange gold, small film of white head. Fruity yeast esters and a metallic grassy hop character in the aroma. Metallic and citric hop flavors, muted maltiness with an apple skin tinge. Residual tartness and astringency in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium, fairly dry.

Deep golden body with gentle carbonation and a dissipating, sudsy white head. Aroma of baked tart apples, toasted grain, rosy esters, and spicy hops. Malt profile on the tongue is somewhat flaccid and reminds me of iced tea. This beer is quite tart and bitter. Bottle-conditioning seems to have run amok here, but at least it’s still drinkable at this point. Puts you in the Christmas spirit in the same way that getting a crappy sweater does. Thanks to argo0 for giving me the beer equivalent of a free crappy sweater.

Draft.. very hoppy for an ESA. An average mix of some fruitiness with dry snap. Okay to drink, especially with food.

Aroma is a fruity malt, due I believe to Ringwood yeast. Hazy amber, pours a large custard head, loads of floaties. Flavour is also a fruited malt, tart, almost lambic-like, quite easy drinking. Very good.

This English Strong Ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 500ml bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine and floral. Medium sized English Strong Ale. Malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. Hops are grapefruity and floral. You can sure taste the Cascade Hops in this beer; I mean they just sort of overpower everything else. It’s a bit like drinking grapefruit juice, but at least it’s not lifeless and dull. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is crisp and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and grapefruity.

Not that bad. Not worth the price either. But it is nice to see the Brits using hops in their beer, even nicer to taste a fresher example from what I’ve had before.

Bright bubbly pumpkin color with creamy head, strong leafy aroma with orchard fruits. Light bodied with a fresh floral hop taste rounded by soft malt that adds sweetness to the piney finish.
