Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned: Seasonal.
"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Bright bubbly pumpkin color with creamy head, strong leafy aroma with orchard fruits. Light bodied with a fresh floral hop taste rounded by soft malt that adds sweetness to the piney finish.

this was pretty good - refreshing and smooth. poured a bright golden hue and went down easy. I’m surprized that it got such poor ’numbers’ here. I’d by it again

Orange to light amber in color with very little head. Pale malt aroma a little hoppy in the nose. Semi-dry in the flavor a nice smooth light flavor. Hop and malt character are blended well. Has some spicey notes to it also. Remind me of a hoppier winterwelcome. Clean refreshing aftertaste, a little on the watery side.

Pours an almost brilliantly clear, full copper color that is topped by a frothy, three-finger thick, pale off-white colored head. The aroma has a light hoppiness to it that reminds me of herbal scents, a lightly sweet citrus-like lemon note, and even a hint of soft spiciness. The hop notes definitely dominate the aroma, but they are certainly not clubbing me over the head like and American hopped beer would.

The taste is fairly dry with a nice sharp, almost biting bitterness that carries through to the end. The hop flavor is a mix of herbal, perhaps even grassy, and lemon like citrus notes. There is a touch of malt sweetness that sneaks in to the middle of this beer; it accentuates the citrus character a bit and provides some balance to the hop notes. This has a nice heft to it, that is not too light and yet not so heavy that this is not quaffable. This beer tastes quite similar to what I would describe as an American brewed English style IPA. Restrained crystal malt character with lots of hop character. As the beer warms up the simple grain sweetness picks up a bit and this in turn accentuates the citrus notes a bit; even picks up some notes of orange. This is definitely quite enjoyable.

[bottle - 50 cl] Clear orange pour with a very fizzy white head. Sweet, malty and yet floral aroma. The taste begins with a very watery yet malty taste that quickly disappears from the palate and doesn’t leave much of an aftertaste. Some slight bitterness, and that’s about it.

Not a thrilling beer. I found it to be a little cloyingly sweet toward the end.

medium hops, flat carbonation leaving a quick finish. sweet, and simple. Not so much alcohol in this strong ale which i liked. Better than Wychwood.
