"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Color is golden with a creamy white head. Hops are prominent in the aroma. Flavor is mostly hops but with only a little bitterness and some spice coming through in the end.

50cl botte in TN. Fairly normal strong ale but they did bring up the level of hops in both the flavour and the aroma. Still a solid malt backbone though. Good.

50cl bottle. Dark gold with a medium rocky head that leaves ample lace. Slightly damp hop aroma, with pear, melon rind and some orange-ade. Medium sweet, doughy malts with medium bitterness and clean, citrus and light leafy hop flavors. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. Decently malty and hoppy ale. Not really the fresh-hop punch that they may lead you to expect, but decent enough hops for an imported English ale.

500ml bottle. Faintly sweet, grainy malt aroma, lightly honeyish and fruity, with notes of citrus, pear and apple, overall effect is pretty slight, however. Clear medium golden color with a lasting, fine, white head. Flavor is predominantly fruity and very lightly bitter, with a touch of pineapple, grapefruit and doughy, lightly bready malts, and finishing with a touch of cedar, and a light dose of hop bitterness, earthiness and spiciness. Smooth and low in effervescence on the palate, almost juice-like in consistency, with a medium body. Just very mild character, drinks not at all like the hefty Winter Ale one might expect.

Bottle. Hazed gold. Small white head. Nose is floral with lively hops, light fruit notes, malt, and spicy notes. Taste is chewy malts, light toffee, spicy notes, floral hops , light grass and fruit. Some herbal notes come through here as well. Body is bubbly and light to light-medium overall. Ends with more herbal notes, light spicy and floral hops, chewy malts and grass. Some fruit coming through as well.

Nice mix of hops and spice. Golden pour, but doesn’t overpower on the taste.

Though Im not usually a fan of the English strong ales this one is the one that changes everything. Good aroma and taste of hops. Very smooth. Golden in color. What I look for in a beer. Great brew.
