"Winter Ale". Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5%.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

Bottle. Pours clear orange with a large, rocky, white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt -bread, grain, straw-, average hops -flowers, grass-, average yeast -sweat, earth- with notes of apple, pear, and peach. Medium bodied, gritty texture, average carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

From a 500 ml bottle this poured a cloudy gold with a small white head and light lacing. Nose of pine hops, with a hint of citrus. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor shows a lot of bitterness in rich malt backbone, and the finish is even more bitter. Quite drinkable and suitable for a winter brew.

Golden color with a thin white head. Hoppy aroma with a hint of citrus. Malty mouth feel with a crisp finish and a nice hop bite to it.

Aroma is a crisp hoppy scent. Color is a bright gold with good carbonation and a small tight head. Taste is crisp and clean. Starting with a lighter medium body it goes down smooth with a clean crisp feel. Finish is light with just a hint of malt some nice hop flavor and a mellow bitterness. After taste is clean with just a touch of bitterness lingering on. Its a nice little English Ale but a bit mild for a Winter brew.

Sample at December 12, 2008 Beer Club meeting. Very light color. Golden. No real head. Sweet, bitter aroma. Sweet, decent flavor. I expected more from the appearance.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden yellow with a diminished white head. Mild citrusy and fruity hops aroma. Citric fruity and refreshing hoppy flavoured. Crisp and easy. Smooth and fruity finish with a delicate fruity hops flavour. Nice one.

Bottle pours clear golden with thin white head. Aroma is sweet malt and citrus. First taste is sweet, then citrus/pine hops. Really drinks like a lager with high carbonation and no alcohol tast at all. Pretty good.
