Brown/black color with a minimal tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malt. Medium body with slight but biting, carbonation. Rather dark roast/toast flavor, but not all that bitter. There’s some coffee in it. Seems to be a touch of pepper in the finish. Very drinkable, but not so good as to justify a long trip to obtain it. marcus (988), Sacramento, California, USA Aug 25, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a thin beige head that disappeared right away. There is a thick caramel malt flavor with raisin notes and some carbonated bitterness at the finish. TheGrandMaster (1451), Auckland, New Zealand Aug 25, 2008 Bottle (in NZ), pours a cola-brown with a filmy head. A good roasted malt aroma, with caffeine, cherry and vanilla. The palate is roasted and bitter, with strong vinuous qualities. Coffee flavours touch the tongue at first, but it is more chocolate in the swallow, along with a cooked fruits sweetness. Very pleasant. Angeloregon (1891), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 19, 2008 Bottle from John’s Market Place in Multnomah Village, Portland, OR--Poured a deep hearty black-brown body with a medium soft grey head. Nose of liquorish, vanilla, milk, mild sourness, chocolate, toffee, and roasted java beans. Great full-on malt spine with bittering hops imparted in finish. Mildly cloying and perhaps a little out-dated (John’s is known for this) but overall, a welcomed companion.
