Commercial Description:
Ridgeway FES bottle matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal licorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the ageing process. Beneath all this change sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hop. Satisfyingly foreign. You might even imagine the glow of the peat fire?

Bottle picked up from Westholme, Londis, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon, had this 15-05-08 Dark brown pour with beige head. Sweet roasted flavours with some dark bitter chocolate, a touch of vanilla enters the fray before this is all swamped by the roasted bitter flavours, quite nice foreign stout.

Bottle 50cl.
Clear medium brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. (190608)

Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Brown/black color with a minimal tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malt. Medium body with slight but biting, carbonation. Rather dark roast/toast flavor, but not all that bitter. There’s some coffee in it. Seems to be a touch of pepper in the finish. Very drinkable, but not so good as to justify a long trip to obtain it.

This dark brown ale poured with a thin beige head that disappeared right away. There is a thick caramel malt flavor with raisin notes and some carbonated bitterness at the finish.

Bottle (in NZ), pours a cola-brown with a filmy head. A good roasted malt aroma, with caffeine, cherry and vanilla. The palate is roasted and bitter, with strong vinuous qualities. Coffee flavours touch the tongue at first, but it is more chocolate in the swallow, along with a cooked fruits sweetness. Very pleasant.

Bottle from John’s Market Place in Multnomah Village, Portland, OR--Poured a deep hearty black-brown body with a medium soft grey head. Nose of liquorish, vanilla, milk, mild sourness, chocolate, toffee, and roasted java beans. Great full-on malt spine with bittering hops imparted in finish. Mildly cloying and perhaps a little out-dated (John’s is known for this) but overall, a welcomed companion.
