Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned, Special;
Imperial Red Ale
"My goodness", muttered Claus, recalling his visit to the Institute, "the restrictive outerwear, the padded room-even padded Christmas tree ornaments. Horrifying! Yet the little chap seems happier than he’s ever been" Claus took a thoughtful sip of a most warming red ale. "Perhaps sanity is over-rated...Ho,Ho,Ho!"

The beer departs the 330ml bottle a crystalline golden amber with a smallish creamy white head that erodes quickly leaving a thin coating of lace upon the glass. Nose has a malt sweet aroma, a bit of alcohol also present, a tad bit of hops, spicy and earthy, crisp and pleasant. Start is sweet with a nice malt profile, alcohol bitter at the back with a medium feel. Finish has a stern acidity, the hops present, but overpowered by the 11.20 ABV, dry sweet aftertaste, and a definite tummy warmer this one, and a real “Hoot”!

Sampled at Famous Liqours Holiday Tasting in Lombard, IL. Poured a clear, light copper color, with off white foam that diminished quickly to a ring and film, and left some clingy spots of lacing. The aroma was immediately boozy, with dried fruit and malt sweetness, and some light caramel. The flavor was sweeter, syrupy, and candy-like, along with some light hop bitterness, and medium, warming alcohol. Seated, and not too close to the fireplace would be good for this one!

Thick mouthfeel. Lots, and lots of alcohol through this one. The nose is dominated by the alcohol. Tastes a lot of alcohol combined with malts and balanced with some hops. Syrupy. Long, long finish. Probably good with one beer for the night.

Clear golden color. Pours an average head that fully diminishes. Sweet malty aroma. Initial sweet malty flavor balanced by a moderate alcohol finish.

Amber color; medium head. The aroma is initially malty and fruity, but it doesn’t last. Good body strength, round mouthfeel; sweet caramel flavor, with correct bitterness and light fruitness. Not as malty as a Barley Wine should be, it’s more a sweeter and fruiter version of Strong Ale; no thrills, but very enjoyable.

2009 Vintage. Clear copper color with a medium head. Light rye and sherry notes in the aroma, as well as more yeastiness than I expected for the style. Immediately dry. Bready and grainy. Light fruit (cherry?) and rye pepperiness after warming a bit. Biscuity. Very underrated and much better than the other Elves in the lineup.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of alcohol - barley wine sweet, nuts, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, malt, and caramel, leading to a dry aloholic finish. The alcohol leaves a burn in the throat.

This red ale has the body and sweetness of Port wine. Has a strong red grape/honey flavor. I like port; however, I was in the mood for beer.
