Commercial Description:
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

500 ml. bottle. Pours a thin beige head of poor duration, but with attractive lacing, over a clear, brown (SRM 25) body.....nose is heavy coffee, light chocolate, bit of caramel....taste is sweet caramel to start then drier chocolate malt, with some coffee, finishing with light bitterness........mouth feel is medium, carbonation adds a creamy touch. This is a nice Foreign Stout, bit of sweetness, with roasted malt textures, perhaps better than Lion. Need to do a side by side tasting.

25 oz bottle served in a clear pint glass. Pour was a cola brown with a half inch of light tan head; there is a decent amount of lacing left on the glass as well. Nose is light roasted malt, light coffee, and notes of something sweet. Taste is the same, with a bit of bitterness throughout. About the same as Guinness, but it is a little sweeter and bit more bitter. Not bad, but nothing to write home about either.

Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is of toasted malt with a hint of hops. Taste is sweet up front but with a bitterness that hits in the back of your mouth. Pretty good brew.

Pours deep brown in color. Aroma is toasted malt, with a hint of coffee and molasses. medium bitterness with a slightly sweet, but astringent finish. Not too bad. Similar to Guinness, but with CO2 instead of Nitrogen. Also, a bit sweeter.

500 ml bottle. Finland.
Dark brown colour with tiny tan head. Liquorice and some chocolate in aroma. Flavour is liquorice big time. Some dryish ashyness and notes of sugar. Very drinkable for 8% brew for my rating #900.

Dark brown pour with a watery tan head and lace. Light coffee, cough syrup, and roasted malt on the nose. Abv, light chocolate, and a nice malt bitter. Smooth silky mouthfeel, medium bodied, just a light hint of thin. A really nice beer for me.

Black, with a good reusable homebrew bottle. Mostly dry and toasty. Lots of chocolate notes. Medium-heavy body. Nice finish. Consumed without benefit of notepad, so please excuse the terse review.
