| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 4, 2004 (22-ounce bottle) An American brewed version of an English recipe has produced unexpectedly good results; This is, in fact, a very delicious beer, very malty and fruity in the English tradition, quite sweet (but not cloying), and lightly bitter in the finish; The sweetness, while enjoyable and not cloying in the least, is perhaps a bit too sweet and out of balance with the rest of the beer, but I'm being picky here; Seems higher in alcohol that it actually is; Wonderful smoky finish really wraps up this beer nicely; Drink while chilled because as it warms up and the carbonation diminishes, the beer does become somewhat sugary; The long-lasting palate is full bodied, but not heavy, and is soft, smooth, buttery, and velvety, with light carbonation; The nose is very English, with fruity and lightly malty aromas; Copper in color with a very slight haziness; Good size tan head has average retention and leaves very little lacing since the head's bubbles that catch the glass evaporate almost immediately; I would not hesitate to buy this by the case, it's extremely enjoyable and definitely something I would recommend burgerlicious (308), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 1/20 | Jun 11, 2004 Amber to dark amber in color, decent aroma of yeast and hops. Flavor is sharp to bitter. The alchol is not hidden well and a bit overpowering for 5.9% content. Just did’t care for this Extra Special Ale. Shadrach (176), Brooklyn, New York, USA
