It pours from the bottle a deep amber color with barely any lacing, let alone a head. Nice roasted malt aroma with a touch of grassiness. Very smooth mouthfeel, but perhaps a bit watery. Tastes of roasted malts, mildly sweet, with a subtle hop balance. Very clean finish.

Easy-to-quaff texture, and it was actually fuller bodied than I expected. Rich grains, nuts, tobacco, light wood and subtly sweet honey. A grassy-sour bitterness kind of ruined the show a bit. Individually, there seemed to be some nice elements. But collectively, they didn’t really seem to go together so well. geherald (8), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA does not count | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 30, 2008 My favorite beer from Rio Grande. Nice malty characteristics, grainy, a little nutty, with the right balance of hops. A good California Common and one of the better bottled beers from New Mexico.
Rio Grande is still around. The beer is produced by Sierra Blanca Brewing company now and has changed slightly since the buyout happened. Sierra Blanca produces 4 Rio Grande beers for distribution: Outlaw Lager, Desert Pils, Pancho Verde Green Chile, and IPA. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA

Thanks to Vince and Kathy for my gift to beer of the month club - this is one of the monthly selections and I’m looking forward to the next ones. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA

Beer pours a fluffy ivory head and an amber body. The aroma is sweet and underdeveloped. Flavor brings a slight nuttiness, some sweet roasted grains, and a hint of molasses. The palate is super thin and the beer is forgettable, however, I would definitely not pass if it were offered once again… probably because I would have forgotten about its few characteristics.
