Commercial Description:
The fabled Hop-a-lot-amus is a mythical creature. The heavy hop character of this Double IPA is as subtle as a "river horse" in your lap, but finishes like a hippo in a tutu. Enjoy! 93 IBUs

amber pour with a moderate body that is refreshing, sudsy and tangy with touch of soap. strong enough and slightly harsh ipa flavor of grapefruit rind. seems less in the alcohol than admitted. nice aroma of the hops with a flavor of greenstick vine in accompanyment. a hop imbibers elixer and a winner at that! good hearty burp.

@Uno’s Caskfest-pours a thin white head and hazy gold color. Aroma is pine/citrus-grapefruit hops, some medium malt. Taste is sweet light/medium malt, then herbal tea/medicinal hops, alcohol.

A - hazy apricot. liked the fact that it was partially filtered. Poured with a great head, the kind that looks like you could sculpt something. Lots of lacing S - definite hop nose but not super strong T - slightly sweet at first with a good firm, slightly bitter hop finish. dry on the end m - just the right amount of carbonation D - definitely a keeper with a nice hop balance. Can definitely drink more than one in a sitting

Snagged this at State Line. Probably the best beer I’ve had from River Horse, though admittedly that’s not a huge triumph. A deep golden pour, with sea foam head and some mild haze to it. I actually found the hop aroma somewhat modest, and the taste was moderately grassy, balanced by an indistinct fruitiness. Full bodied, and very drinkable - seems more like a regular IPA to me. Not bad at all.

THOUGHTS: I was waiting to try this for a while back when I found this. Lots of hops, but not the kinds I really like. I don’t know from the other review if the early draft version was off or what, but the bottled version is full of hops. Not a lot of balance, but just enough to keep it from being unbearably bitter. At first I was a little put off by the aroma, but it grew on me. Orange rind is the star here. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark, brownish, orangey amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was light caramel malt; heavy piney, resinous, orangey, cat pee and earthy hops; some funk that I think was the hops and not the yeast. The initial flavor was sweet and bitter; while the finish was mostly very bitter and a little sweet with a very long duration. There was a little caramel malt, bitter orange peel, and piney, orangey and resinous hops. The medium body was sort of oily and then fairly dry with tingly carbonation and a light alcoholic finish.

Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. The look is clear, golden in color, and has a white head. The smell is alcohol, caramel, and hops. The taste is hops, some bitterness, and ok.

Amber pour with a big loose off white head. Aroma is big citrus hop notes, some pine in the back and a good malt backbone. Flavor isa little on the harsh side, kind of astringent and a little chemical, but not terrible. The hops are present for sure and nicely balanced by the malt. Just a weird little undercurrent of something almost chemical.

Bottle from jessup plaza. poured a light amber pour with a nice off white head. aroma is of light hops with some malt sweetness. First taste is somewhat lax on the hops but then the taste comes back at the end. Mouthfeel is not that great. but flavor is not too bad.
