williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Nov 8, 2009 A light cranberry red. Clear but for the fog on the glass. One half finger of foamy off-white head. Lots of bubbles. Diggin’ the look.
Strong alcohol aroma, just this side of a barleywine. Some sweetish leathery malt notes. Hints of dark berry. A light barleywine smell.
The taste is strong and a bit puckery sour. Some leathery malt, almost like a porder in its darkness, but balanced by some dark berry. Hints of dark caramel. Strong malts. Hops are English and subdued.
The feel is thick, almost like a cream ale; full bodied. It’s a drinkable "special ale." They call it an ESB but it’s far stronger. Nice and substantial. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Oct 26, 2009 Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber/brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, oatmeal, light spices, overall kind of odd. Flavor of tons of sweet fruits: peach, apricot, pear and apple. Not really a fan of the aroma, but I’m really enjoying the fruitiness. Reminds me of one of those canned mixed fruit cups. I didn’t have high hopes for this beer initially, but I ended up really enjoying it.
7/4/7/4/15 [3.7/5] doubleo (1096), San Diego, California, USA Oct 18, 2009 12oz’er from dmac. Pours cloudy, light amber with a huge, billowing white head with great retention and good lace. Smells of yeast and clove like some sort of Belgian style brew. Tastes the same as it smells, yeast and clove dominate, some spice and only a hint of maltiness. Medium body, vibrant carbonation. Not much of an ESB per say but it looks good and tastes ok. jimmay (179), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Oct 13, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours light copper, orangey in colour, with very little head. Aroma is sweet, flavour also is a light sweet malty taste (carapils?). Slightly earthy hop finish. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Oct 7, 2009 Bottle from Dmac. Thanks, dude! Pours an average amber with an aroma of candied malt and grassy hops. Flavor is sweet all around- candied malt and sugary hops. Average mouthfeel. Pretty middle-of-the-road stuff. Sparky27 (1559), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Oct 6, 2009 12oz bottle courtesy of LilBeerDoctor. Pours hazy orange with a 2 finger beige head. The nose is sweet malt, grain and light earthy hops. The taste is caramel, honey, biscuits and light hops in the finish. Medium bodied. OK ESB. Thanks Margaret! michael-pollack (2601), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 28, 2009 12oz. Bottle: Aroma of skunk and malts. Poured orange/amber in color with a small, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Hazy. Lightly sparkling. Flavor is slightly sweet. Tastes of skunk and malts. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Skunk finish is dry. kuphish (150), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Sep 21, 2009 Bottle. Pours an average, creamy, off-white, pitted head. Clear, copper body. Yeast clouds are introduced with the last swirl. Tasty, herbal, earthy hop aroma with some hop spiciness. Caramel malt and light toast/biscuit. More herbal hops in the flavor along with some musty forest. Caramel malt lends a pleasant sweetness. Some biscuit and light raisin round out the flavors. Medium bodied, light carbonation. Relatively sweet, but I find that the bitterness balances it nicely for the style. Fairly clean finish. Overall very nice. I guess I’m in the minority.
