Commercial Description:
Special Ale is our flagship ESB. It’s been with us from the start and hasn’t changed since that first brew way back in 1996. Ample quantities of caramel malt give this English ale a soft copper hue and the colorful addition of carapils malt adds a slight sweetness you might mistake for honey.

The aroma is lightly caramelly and hop aroma is very light. The flavor has a light caramelly sweetness with low levels of hoppishness. Finish on the palate is almost watery.

Poured a hazy copper color with a thin off-white head. Aroma of toffee, candy brittle, buttery, earthy and vegetal. The flavor was malty with a light sweetness and some tartness. Fair body.

Bottle. Poured a copper color with an average frothy white head that diminished slowly. Moderate sweet caramel malt aroma. Medium body with a thin texture. Moderate sweet malty honey flavor with a average finish.

Sampled on draught at the brewery in Lambertville, NJ. Pours to a bright, burnt orange to red color, with a tight white head, that fades, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose has some nice, soft, flowery hop aroma, paired with some sweet malt aroma, and fruity esters. The palate is soft, with some good pale, and sweet malt flavor, paired with juicy fruit flavor. This beer finishes with more malt and fruit flavors up front, then ends with a mild hop bitterness to balance out the sweet malt flavor of this beer. Nice, easy, drinking, session brew. A good effort, and a very food friendly beer that would match with lots of food combinations.

This ESB pours a medium amber color with a clear body. Small white head forms but quickly disappears. Aroma is of a mild sweet scent, with the addition of moderate pine, woodsy hops. Initial taste is a light sweet, finishing a light bitter. The Special Ale feels light to medium on the mouth, leaving it dry with lively carbonation.

Bottled. Poured tawny with a dirty-white head. Malty aroma, a little hint of fruit with a taste to match. Not very hoppy in the finish. An okay brew.
