Commercial Description:
Special Ale is our flagship ESB. It’s been with us from the start and hasn’t changed since that first brew way back in 1996. Ample quantities of caramel malt give this English ale a soft copper hue and the colorful addition of carapils malt adds a slight sweetness you might mistake for honey.

Murky orange-amber with minimal (slightly scuzzy-looking) white head. Aromas are sweet with a little bit of a spicy character. Not univiting, but not complex either. Rather blah taste... sweet malt dominates with a little hoppy kick, but relatively unispiring. Butterscotch mixed with caramel is a pretty good description. Definitely lacks the kick of most ESB’s.

on tap-pours a rich, light tan head. Copper color. Aroma malt, hops, sweet. Taste is quite mild with the hops and malt being about equally present. Less hops than the ESB category usually has, but a nice beer. Mild effervescence and medium body.

Draught at the Porterhouse Restaurant. Clear amber body with a filmy white head. Sweet butterscotch and caramel aroma. Diacetyl is evident. Flavor of pure butterscotch, lightly toasted malt, and weak hop character and bitterness. Slick, buttery palate.

12 oz bottle Pours a cloudy amberwith a good off white frothy head. Hoppy aroma with hints of carmel and cookies. Medium body tastes lightly bitter with an average finish. A decent enough brew although it vlacks some personality. But good enough to drink.

Bottle: Amber hued with a fading fizzy head and no lace. The aroma has notes of light grapefruit and grassy hops, bready and grainy, a hint of caramel, and earthy yeast esters. The taste was straight forward, moderate bitters on top of a light malt and husk backbone. The feel is very watery and almost no depth. Expected more, got less.

Bottle. Light copper color on the pour with hardly any head. A very mild ESB. More malt than hoppy flavor. Very mild for the style but still good.

Deep golden in color with a slight haze and a off-white head. Aroma is fruity, mildy hoppy. Thin bready malt flavor.

Nutty nose, leaves. Orange-amber color, frothy and foamy head. Light toaste body, artificial end - not hoppy, but bitter. Thin and quick. Weak, really. Not so good. Like a typical bad British ale actually.
