Commercial Description:
Special Ale is our flagship ESB. It’s been with us from the start and hasn’t changed since that first brew way back in 1996. Ample quantities of caramel malt give this English ale a soft copper hue and the colorful addition of carapils malt adds a slight sweetness you might mistake for honey.

12 oz bottle...pours amber w/ a slight crimson hue. Slight off-white head with a fair amount of retention and lacing. The initial smell was very fruity but that soon gave way to a floral hoppiness, and some caramel malts. The flavor leaned a little too much towards the hops causing the beer to be a tab bit more bitter than expected. Combined with a the medium body and moderate amount of carbonation it drank more like an APA than an ESB. I prefer my ESBs to be a little more balanced. Not a bad beer, just not my ideal ESB.

Clear amber appearance with an average size, off white head and a fair amount of lacing. Caramel malt aroma. Slightly grainy, toasted malt taste with a low keyed hop presence lingering in the background. Medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel with a short lived finish. Decent session beer.

Malt and light fruit hop aroma. Clear orange color with a medium white head. Sweet hop flavor with a light amount of citrus that lasts into the finish.

On tap Mr Goodbar, Buffalo. Pretty basic& rather boring beer. Drinkable but little going on here. Sort of shocked its labeleed as an ESB. Little bitterness if any. Mild to medium caramel malts. Easy to drink but little else

Sweet malt and hop aroma. Malty Coca-Cola like flavor - smooth and sweet. Light on the palate. This doesn’t really seem like a bitter - not sure what to call it except average.

Bottle 355 ml
Appearance: Clear brew of amber color, large, rocky , stiff and creamy head with half and half lacing 4-
Nose: Sweet pale-amber malts with green , fruity hop feel. Hint of green apple and spice.
Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied. Unusual fruity green hop accents. Black teas like follow up. Fruity bitter mid-end. Decent but it feels like it was not sure what it wanted to be. British ale with amber America funk?

Lightly hazed, light orange umber color. Taller light taupe head. Decent lace. Earthy caramel and some sour dough aromas. Toasted biscuits and some dried flowers as well. Light caramel, floor malt and herbal to floral hops float about in the mouth. Very traditional. Hints of hazelnut in the background. A little sharpness, as in the sourdough aroma, come in play in the flavor as well and distracts slightly. Otherwise a nice traditional esb.

12oz from Once Upon a Vine, Richmond. I hate to say that when you put the word "special" in your beer’s name you’re setting yourself up for harsh reviews, but . . . well, there it is. Anyways, a decent looking beer, amber and nicely carbonated. Moderate head. Nose is soft and fruity, and these elements combine with strong malts in the taste. Bready without feeing washed out, but there’s still not a whole lot of piquancy to the flavor. Average amber more than a solid ESB. And no, not special.
