Ungstrup (11075), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 29, 2007 Bottled. A copper colored beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with primary notes of caramel, but also a light spicy touch. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and a spicy note of coriander. Papsoe (9999), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 4, 2007 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Clear, amber golden with a small, off-white head. Lightly sweet, caramelish nose. Medium body with dry and lightly burned caramel and some bittering hops in the finish. I can see how this is labelled as a märzen, it’s just SO different from a German example of the style. 280507 BückDich (4540), Boise, Idaho, USA Jul 6, 2006 Amber color, thin head, no lacing. Nose of light malts, undescript typical hops. Nothing good. The flavor is average, light and thin. Pale ale was the best in this lineup. The finish is lotiony, mouthfeel is horrible. Offensive with its overbearing mediocrity. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 23, 2008 12 ounce bottle from City Market in Burlington VT (January 2008), served a little below cellar temperature from a Unibroue glass. A massive, smooth but quickly diminishing white head fills 2/3 of the glass, leaving light spidery lacing above the clear amber-gold body....musty aroma, dried caramel chews and a hint of vanilla and licorice, faint toasty malts, no hop presence....moderately sweet, grainy body, bit caramel-ly, with some burnt and chalky characteristics towards the finish that make for a somewhat unpleasant conclusion....watery texture, somewhat artificial/forced-seeming carbonation, bit of metallic character. About what I’d expect from this brewery. Cornfield (4255), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2006 Certainly not a Marzen, as frankenkitty aptly points out. That being said, what the heck is a Marzen style ale? This brew poured a copper/amber body with a slender head. The aroma has lightly roasted, sweet malts, hand lotion, and a nutty bitterness. Well carbonated. The flavor is sugary sweet, malty, and has a slight herbal bitterness in the finish. This is the weakest of this line that I’ve had to date.
