Commercial Description:
Coup de Grisou was introduced on the market in October 1996. It is a copper-coloured Ale-type beer, containing 5% alcohol, refermented in bottle. With a potent, explosive taste, this beer has a powerful aroma of buckwheat and coriander giving it an unbelievable density. Bottle refermentation imparts a yeast-enriched flavour. Serve between 6° and 8° C, preferably in a hybrid glass.

Cloudy dark orange color with small white head. Aroma has lots of orange, flowery, perfumy notes. Flavor is flowery, bit of camomile, honey, and oranges.

Brown bottle 330 ml, cloudy golden color, nice light lacing, smell of coriander and buckwheat, taste of a lot of spices, light bitterness, finale of coriander. Really well balanced beer. Bouteille brune de 330 ml, Couleur or terni presque opaque, beau collet fin, Odeur de coriandre et de sarrsin, petite note floral, Goût fort d’épices et légèrement amère, finale de coriandre. Très bien équilibré

2006 bottle drunk on 8/27/06.
Heavily sedimented bottle, though leaving most behind, produces a dark bronze-iron color with very strong magenta and blood orange highlights. Very slight haziness to it and a large beige head that shows moderate retention and light lacing. Tiny bubbles course upwards in the liquid.
Sweet nose portrays a fair amount of bubble gum and cotton candy, with a moer dry, spiced side on the finish that is almost nutty, but I suppose must be dry coriander. Sweet fruits are laced throughout, extremely estery. Light powdered sugar and raw buckwheat grains soften things. Ends with a strong sense of vanilla and cotton candy again, perhaps some banana. Just phenomenally estery stuff.
Sweet in flavor as well, more bubble gum than probably is good for it, leading to a rather insipidly sweet flavor that adds minimally spicy coriander and white pepper notes. Some more banana esters and almost a cola-like note on the end, with more fluffy pale grains. Sort of reminds me of Silenrieux buckwheat ale in the soft, powdery, fluffy sweetness. The bubble gum and cotton candy, however, just seem a bit too much, and the heavy fruit esters further muddle things. Interesting and incedibly unique, without any thinning/wateriness and a very comfortable texture, but it just seems like they let this yeast go crazy and I don’t quite think this yeast needs to go crazy. No alcohol noted. Some livlier spice and more dryness with less esters would be beneficial to the drinkability.

Hazy dark amber color. The flavor is spicy with some citrus taste to it, I also could taste a bit of banana as it went on. The finish just did not leave a good taste in my mouth. An average beer.

Got this beer because of the crazy label (looks like a meteor hitting a man’s face) and was pleasantly surprised. Cheval Blanc beers tend to be very carbonated, which is a nice change from some of the flatter American beers. The color was a little darker and murkier than a true hefeweizen with a foamy white head. The initial flavor was spicy wheat, due to the buckwheat I’m sure. This beer was refreshing with a citrus finish.

Bottled. The body is slightly hazy and orange with a slightly yellowish head. The aroma is fruity with dry cherries and some cinnamon toast. This is smelling nice. The taste is dry pancakes with some light toffee. There is also some banana and a bit of corriander. This is decent with a medium chewy body.

Bottle - May 2006 Thanks Lubiere for sharing this one. Pours a hazy golden colour with a generous white head. Aroma is spicy, clovey. Taste is esthery with some coriander, clove and a bit of bananas; very refreshing and pleasant. An interesting marriage between a hefe weizen and a wit.
