Commercial Description:
Bottled version, most likely pasteurised - the cask version has a separate listing.
Old Tom with chocolate Strong Ale. A blend of Old Tom and the finest English chocolate. Old Tom with chocolate is a sensuously rich warming combination of Robinsons award winning Old Tom Ale and the finest cocoa. It is a superior, full-bodied strong ale filled with the flavour of ripe malt and velvety smooth chocolate teased together with an inspired touch of Madagascan Bourbon vanilla. Old Tom is recognised as one of the most famous strong ales brewed in England, and the addition of this original recipe developed by Robinsons with the renowned chocolatier Simon Dunn makes for a deliciously indulgent winter treat. Contains malted barley.

500 ml bottle sampled@RBNAG 2009, Cardinal. Dark golden with a thin but nice beige head. Aroma is totally dominated by chocolate and vanilla. Flavor is mild malty, but mostly chocolate, some vanilla and moderate metallic bitter. A bit one-dimensional chocolate flavor here, but still pretty good in moderate amount

Bottle. heavy sweet aroma of chocolate. But though a fine body beer, the chocolate disappoint a bit because its too sweet. The beer could do with dark chocolate.

Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is brown. Aroma and taste are chocolate syrop, malt, fruits and caramel. Chocolate is a little too artificial.

(bottle) Clear, dark amber colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Sweet aroma with distinctive notes of chocolate, accompanied by a fruity touch and vinous, slightly toasted malty accents. Slightly sweet and bitter flavour, medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel. Mildly toasted and sweet malty base, combined with notes of chocolate and a moderate to light fruit-character, drying out towards the slightly harsh bitter-tart and fruity finish with notes of alcohol. Not a particularly rounded brew which might work for people because of its special chocolate character. 29.XI.09

Bottle. Dark brown and red with a large off-white foam. Aromas are chocolate and toffee malts with spices. Some caramel and evident alcohol. Flavours are sweet, smooth chocolate with grain. Quite yeasty. The original Old Tom loses something along the way.

From bottle@Cardinal, Stavanger. A dense, light brown head upon a brilliant, reddish-brown body. Milk-chocolate and vanilla on the nose. Taste is fairly dry; chocolate, mild coffee and vanilla. Some fruit tones and a certain sourness underneath. A minimum of hops included. Soft and creamy in the mouth. Mouthfilling. Dry, cocoa-ish malt finish. Good stuff.

Bittersweet russet coloured ale. Chocolate is fairly prominent, particularly in the aroma and is a bit reminiscent of Young’s Chocolate Stout. An almost sour, yet not unpleasant tanginess lurks around, with some dryness in the finish, but it has a reasonable kick without being overpowering and it’s not quite as in yer face as the, far better in my opinion, Ginger Tom.
