Taste is complex and hard to describe all things encountered. Noticed coffee, chocolate and a hint of licorice. Some bitterness. Great beer, but in general I enjoyed the 8 more than the 10. givemebeeer (5), erlangar, Kentucky, USA does not count | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 24, 2009 this only my second trappistes ale iv tasted. the first being westmalle dubbel. which wasnt as good as expected. but i heard good things about the rocheforts. so i gave in again to try this. and well. not disapointed AT ALL. poured into a wine glass. which is the closest thing i had to a trappist glass. very nice pour butl there is alot of carbination in this. dark brown with a off tan head. smelled of malts. and almost bread like. tasted of chocolate. coffee. plums. raisens. grapes. was kinda thin mouthfeel but the 11.2% abv was very well hidden nice bitter finish that leaves a malty fruty taste in your mouth. over all an excellent beer. one of my faves so far! finol (516), Nacka (Stockholm), Sweden

Smells of malt and belgian yeast. The aroma is kind of stoutisch and vinous at
the same time.
Chocolate, coffe, rosted malts and some sweetness.
Too carbonated and too thin body. trayns (242), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA

I do not have a palate for Belgians, but I see why this gets so much respect. Pours a deep hazy brown color with a big white head. Aroma is very complex, and hard to describe. Taste is great, hints of malty sweetness, chocolate, and has that Belgian bite that I am not accustomed to just yet. However, I did really enjoy this. Ryan82SM (264), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 20, 2009 Aroma is like a kaleidoscope of fruits: ripe plums, tart apple, grape and so much more. High amounts of sediments, not opaque, but a nice dark brown with generous, carbonated head. The initial flavor almost reminds me of a sour ale, but with all the complexities of a quad. Sour apple, brown sugar, licorine and perhaps even some well hidden citrus near the finish. Palate did not make any attempt to hide alcohol, but has a nice spice filled finish. Worth the accolades, but I also understand why Westvleteren is ranked higher. Adam77 (409), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA
