The head was slightly off-white, full and creamy. The aroma was the expected Belgian yeast with light spice, apples and grapes. The flavor was yeasty, spicy, raisins and some sugary grape soda. The mouthfeel was super nice, a medium bodied beer that was quite refreshing to drink with a clean finish. azlondon (667), Fribourg, Switzerland

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 25, 2008 Updated: Aug 19, 2008Bottle into chalice. Pours murky brown with a two-finger off-white, pillowy head that stays awhile. Aroma is understated - spicy yeast, dark fruit, caramelized brown sugar, barest hint of cocoa. Taste is sweet, up front, a little thin and watery - spicy yeast, cocoa, brown sugar, with dark fruit coming out on the back end alongside the yeast. Finish is bittersweet dark fruits, lingering spicy yeast, cocoa, and a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel varies - watery at times, creamy at others, with an understated carbonation that fits well. Excellent beer, but 8 is still my favorite of the trio. beergeek86 (33), Clarksville, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 25, 2008 A good beer for what it is, but I was expecting better. reddish golden color with an inch foamy, fizzy head that fades quickly.
aroma - tart, dried fruit, malt, licorice, some sublte spice. taste - subtle, but complex. raisins, malt, sugar, w/ licorice becoming more present towards the finish. mouthfeel - milky and creamy with a nice amount of carbonation. finish - milky and creamy with the taste of licorice and alcohol. Again, this beer had a lot going on, but it was too subtle for me, not rich enough. I’m gonna stick to the rochefort 8. 12many (231), Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 23, 2008 Amber pour with a fizzy and quickly dissapating head. Dark fruit aroma, especially raisins. Flavor is sweet and same as the aroma. Palate is rather light and fizzy. A little disappointing, but I guess that happens if you drink the 10 and the 8 first. wyzzywyz22 (795), Wirral, Merseyside, England
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jun 23, 2008 Bottle, Stirchley Wine and Spirits, Birmingham. Disappointed by this. Had the trio back in 2003 and remember ths as the weakest of the quiver. A re-visit has done nothing to dispel me of that opinion. Looked decent enough - a really ruddy colour with a lingering cremy head. Aroma was sourish - had a dose of curdled milk with some dark fruit. Mouthfeel was smooth but a bit full for me - heavily carbonated. Flavour was dark fruit, hay and a bit of spice and hop. Definitely over rated. Pinball (2991), Allerød, Denmark
