markas101 (541), Fargo, North Dakota, USA Jun 1, 2009 33 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA. Translucent deep brown, thin cola like head. Some nice caramel and winte3r spice flavor. Carbonated finish, with some lingering sweetness. Warming but alcohol not overt, very nice clove and brown sugar finsih. Bierkrug (235), Idar-Oberstein (in Pakistan), Germany Jun 1, 2009 330 ml bottle in Belguim, This is not the type of beer I normally like. However that beng said it had a nice brown color with a light brown head with perfect lacing. Aroma of brown sugar. Alcohol not well hiden bt it grows on you when you drink it. Over all a great beer but not something that I want to drink all of the time. madvike (301), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 31, 2009 Bottle - I was expected to be knocked off my feet by this beer, but it was really underwhelming. First off, it looked dead in my glass -- a syrupy amber with suspended floaties that don’t move. It looked solid. The smell, admittedly, is incredible. There’s toffee, plum, even a little menthol (?) -- it’s big and sweet and reminded me of a barley wine. The flavor is pretty good, too -- sweet malt, dark fruit, and candy. There’s a good deal of booze in there too -- it’s a little hot. The body makes it hard to taste the beer -- it’s syrupy and the carbonation is jacked up. It was hard trying to pick out flavors between the bubbly assault on my tongue. All in all, a big disappointment. This was a good beer, but nothing like I was expecting. BroSpud (583), , Massachusetts, USA May 30, 2009 11.2oz bottle. Really good. Nice creamy head. Pours dark. Alot of complex flavors that change as it warms. Very minimal alcohol taste despite the 9.2% abv. MagnumPI (56), Essex, England May 30, 2009 POOR THIRSTS A PERFECT 8 !
Having already had the Trappiste 10, this was always going to be difficult. Probably a good idea to have both together but regardless this is a splendid beer. The pour seemed thinner than the 10, and the head still buoyant. The taste is malt, coffee, chocolate with a hint of sharpness that the 10 doesnt have. I cant split them though. Both fantastic beverages, even with a heavy cold the flavours pour through tilldeath (72), Arvada, Colorado, USA May 30, 2009 great beer, alcohol is a little too present unlike the 10 where it is well hidden. It’s good but not great. roebuck (44), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 30, 2009 Brought back a bottle from Belgium. Pours with a thick white head that disolves quickly. Looks chololate brown, almost like a dark iced-tea. Has a rich caramel / alcholo smell about it. I can taste caramel flavors, hints of chololate, has an addition hint of musty or something old, but in a good way. Perhaps not too unlike an ESB?? Good beer, but I don’t think it’s a 100 rating. obguthr (986), Poquoson, Virginia, USA May 30, 2009 Weak but nice aroma of malt, wood, lemon, pine, and thistle. Well balanced and complex. Muddy brown, with a thick firm tan head. Musty old flavor of candied pears, toffee at midpalate, perfect balance. Chestnuts appear when warmer. Nice transitions. Alcohol noticeable, but feels much less than it is. Faint thistle finish playfully comes and goes. Remarkably well conceived and made. It would probably pair well with strong cheeses. Who could not like this one?
