machfive55 (218), Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 2, 2009 Poured cloudy dark brown with a slight red tint and a three finger white head, there was some yeast sediment in the bottle. The aroma was sweet and malty with peppery and fruity citrus notes. The flavor was complex with malty chocolatey, spicey, peppery and raison notes. It was sweet with a light hop bitterness. The palate was just awesome with the very lively carbonation. Overall this was a rich, complex beer, there is lots going on in the way of flavor and aroma and texture. Very well done, this is what a 4+ beer should be. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA Mar 31, 2009 Finally getting around to rating this. Pours a nice reddish, brown hue with quite a thick head. Aromas waft up of bready sourdough, bakers chocolate and spiced nuts. Quite a bit of carbonation hitting the palate. Great complexity between the candi sugar and various malts that play off each other. The finish was a bit towards the dryer side finishing a bit more clean than I was expecting. Not as intense of an experience as its bigger brother, but still a classic. tpd975 (95), Riverview, Florida, USA Mar 31, 2009 A: Dark brown chestnut hue that poured with a nice solid head which dimished rather quickly. There was spoty lacing and some floaties bouncing around in the glass.
S: Sweet dark fruits; prunes and figs mostly. There is a boozy rum type aroma mingled in with some bready yeast.
T: Dark fruits and rum up front. Some spices with hints of chocolate covered cherries in the middle. Malt and brown sugar finish it out along with just a tad of pipe tobacco.
N: Nicely balanced. Fairly complex brew that is balanced and ever so enjoyable.
D: This one is getting pretty rare around here. I stocked up and plan to enjoy one from time to time over the next year shawnm213 (882), South Bend, Indiana, USA Mar 30, 2009 100th rating. Pours dark with a big foamy head. a great beer. dark fruit. alcohol. enjoyed more than the 10. but lookking to try the 10 and 8 back to back before i pass judgment lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Mar 29, 2009 Dark maroon pour with a big fizzy light beige colored head. Smell is cherry cough syrup, belgian yeast, syrupy malt and perhaps a hint of nuttiness. Taste is much drier than the smell leads on, with slight cherry and red fruit maltiness but it really isn’t sweet. Finishes rather abruptly with no aftertaste and a champagne like feel in the mouth. Incredibly high, fizzy carbonation that makes it hard to taste much. After swirling to flatten it out, there still isn’t much flavor, honestly but a faint raisin quality is there. A light bit of alcohol, but not much. I have no idea what people see in this beer... KyotoLefty (1371), Kyoto, Japan Mar 28, 2009 Huge caramel and grain aroma. Sweet and dessert-like but not a bit cloying. Creamy, full, smooth body. Complex grain, fruit, vineous character. Amazing. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Mar 28, 2009 Pours a very dark ruddy brown. Off-white two finger head that dissipates slowly, but leaves little lacing. Aroma is dried fruits. Flavor is sweet, with cherries, raisins, toffee and oak. Carbonated, champagne-like mouthfeel. Alcohol is a little too present, but an excellent beer nonetheless. bradlyc77 (226), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 27, 2009 Updated: Sep 23, 2009Pours a hazy brown (sometimes chunky). Yeasty aroma with burnt sugar.Taste is yeasty with rum-raisin, fig, caramel/burnt sugar, a bit of grape nuts. Nice hops balance and dry finish. A good brew. (rerated 9/09)
