NathanJM (30), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 26, 2009 Dark Amber/Copper in coloring with a dense, thick head on the pour. Coloring is even, a bit murky. In the mouth, something of a refreshing carbonation with caramelized sugar, maltiness, and hint of molasses and toffee. Possibly fig. Not as raisiny as the 10, which is a positive point, to me. Very well balanced. IrsLuver (3), Maryland, USA does not count Oct 24, 2009 Simply put, Wow! A lot of reviewers say it tastes like raisins or plums, to me it tastes like Concord white grape juice with beer added.Left me feeling euphoric for hours.... scoth (266), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Oct 17, 2009 Pours cloudy chocolate brown, with a one-finger cream-colored head, very good lasting lacing. Yeasty, funky, barnyard aroma, some leather, bread and banana in the background. Medium body, velvety. Flavor isn’t as bad as the aroma, toast, toffee, banana, sour cherry, a grassy and earthy finish, fairly well balanced. I like a little brett, but this is very disappointing. The second bottle I’ve had that smells like dirty gym socks, purchased several months apart and different stock from the store. It’s surprising that a beer this strong would spoil, maybe there’s a problem with this batch or the distributor in this area. I may re-rate this... maybe next year. grikmok (90), Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA Oct 16, 2009 Poured into a trappist glass. Aromas of raisins and plums. Initial flavor of plums, malt and yeast. Ends with a bittersweet and heavy taste. Not a bad beer. Better that the 6. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 14, 2009 Bottle. 11.2 oz. Split with Sean and Dave. Pours slightly hazy amber with a creamy, off-white head. Aroma of hops, raisins, vanilla, figs, chocolate, and hints of coffee. Medium body with a clean, smooth finish. Excellent Belgian strong. Anker (305), Hillerød, Denmark Oct 12, 2009 Bottle.
Pours a hazy dark amber with a big tan head.
It has a well balanced and very vinous aroma with notes of sweet malt, rock candy, spices and dark fruit especially raisins.
Flavour is raisins, alcohol, rock candy, spices and wood with hints of sweet roasted malt. Ending in a alcohol raisin finish. Thin bodied.
Niko100 (81), New York, USA Oct 7, 2009 Updated: Oct 21, 2009Very dark cider brown; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of fruit, spice, and brown sugar; Flavor mainly of fruit, caramel, spice, and some chocolate – alcohol taste towards the finish; Can pack a punch; Quite similar to a port; My favorite of their trappiste so far. TheHulk (104), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Oct 7, 2009 Smells strongly of fermenting malt but is greatly overshadowed by a musty, mildewy smell that really isn’t that pleasant of an addition, it reminds me of my experiences with not-that-great homebrew. Somehow it manages to be both completely dark AND cloudy, though how you can see clouds through the dark, I don’t know. But this beer does it somehow. The flavour is so smooth at first your sort of waiting around for it to pick up and then it’s all up from there. The yeasty flavour actually hits before the malts, and then it all bubbles nicely off the tounge as only a belgian can. Very nice, but I do have to say I thought it would be a bit thicker/stronger.
